  • ExxonMobil Annuitants

    Twenty-nine members and three guests enjoyed a luncheon at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia on Thursday, Nov. 15, for the monthly meeting of the ExxonMobil Annuitants Club.
    Following the pledge to the flag, Brock Fisher asked the meal blessing.
    After the meal, President Dean Black opened the meeting. The secretary and treasurer reports were given and approved.
    Birthdays and anniversaries for November were read.
    Plans for the Christmas party to be held on Dec. 20 at the same location were discussed.

  • Junior Olympics Medalists

    Three local tumblers won medals at the Junior Olympics in Houston, Texas, in August.

  • $35,781 raised for Neurofibromatosis

    A fundraising event held last month in Fayette County generated nearly $18,000 for neurofibromatosis research, and an anonymous donation matched that amount, making the total raised $35,781.42.

  • Engagement

    Shannon Marie Harre and Wesley Dean VanZant have announced their engagement and upcoming marriage.

    The future bride is the daughter of Henry and Connie Harre of Brownstown.
    She is a 2004 graduate of Brownstown High School and a 2008 graduate of Greenville Christian College.
    She is currently employed as a fifth-grade teacher at Greenville Elementary.
    The future groom is the son of Ernest and the late Abigail VanZant of McLeansboro.
    He is a 1999 graduate of McLeansboro High School and a 2001 graduate of Rend Lake College.

  • Anniversary

    Hubert Jr. and Betty Williams of Brownstown will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Nov. 29.


    The couple was honored in October at a family reunion in Northern Illinois, where 46 relatives gathered and celebrated the occasion with cake and the sharing of fond memories.

  • School Briefs

    ROE offices closed Nov. 29

    The Regional Office of Education offices in Bond, Fayette and Effingham counties will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 29, for certification/licensure training.
    The offices will re-open at 8 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 30.

    Food sanitation refresher
    Kaskaskia College will offer a food service sanitation refresher class at the Vandalia Campus on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

  • Fall, summer nursing classes taken at KC

    Two sections of certified nursing assistant students took the eight-week classes of the program this past summer and fall at the Kaskaskia College Vandalia Center.

  • Family Reading Night at VES

    Vandalia Elementary School observed national Family Reading Night on Thursday by inviting parents to the school.

    In the first photo, Brianna Springman and her mother, Angie, go through a book and computer exercise. In the second photo, Delaney Kopp and her mother, Angel, do the same. The evening also included a book fair (third photo) and a visit by Linda Kelly and participants in the P.A.C.K. (Pups Assisting Children with Kindness) program at Evans Public Library in Vandalia.
