  • Godoyo named all-tournament at Litchfield; Lady Vandals go 2-2

    LITCHFIELD — Junior Megan Godoyo was selected to the all-tournament team after she helped the Lady Vandals to a 2-2 mark in the Litchfield Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday after a 44-40 win against Carlinville.

    On Friday, Vandalia lost to Litchfield, 49-35.

    Godoyo had a team-high 11 points against Carlinville in a game that saw Vandalia (2-2) need to make a fourth-quarter comeback after having led the entire second and third quarters.

    The Lady Vandals begin conference play on Thursday, hosting Gillespie at 6 p.m.

  • Brownstown wins Mulberry Grove/Ramsey Super Turkey Tournament

    Behind big efforts from seniors Austin Hunter and Matt Sefton, and junior Jacob Behrends, the Bombers claimed the championship of the Mulberry Grove/Ramsey Super Turkey Tournament on Saturday, defeating Christ Our Rock, 70-65.

    Hunter had a double-double, with 23 points and 19 rebounds for Brownstown (4-0), while Sefton had 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists, and Behrends had 18 points and five rebounds.

    The game was close throughout, with a 34-34 tie at halftime and a 52-52 tie after three quarters.

  • DuQuoin Tournament scheduled changed; event now begins Wednesday

    The Vandalia boys basketball will now begin play in the DuQuoin Tournament on Wednesday after a change in the schedule.

    Agape Christian will no longer play in the tournament, so the Vandals will battle Flora at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Cairo at 6 p.m. on Friday and DuQuoin at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.

    The tournament was originally scheduled to begin on Monday.

  • Lady Vandals now 1-1 at Litchfield Tournament

    The Lady Vandals earned a come-from-behind win on Tuesday at the Litchfield Tournament, defeating Athens, 68-66, on the strength of 24 fourth-quarter points.

    Senior Amber Bruno had 22 points, and junior Megan Godoyo put in 21. Junior Morgan Cripe added 11, and freshman Karlie Bright scored her first four career points.

    Freshman Madelyn Hosick also had her first career points on a field goal.

    Vandalia attempted 49 free throws in the game, and have made 40-of-70 attempts on the season.

  • St. Elmo Holiday Tournament schedule released

    The schedule for this season's St. Elmo Holiday Tournament has been announced, and the hosts have the No. 1 seed.

    Tuesday, Dec. 11
    •Game 1: (1) St. Elmo vs. (8) Mulberry Grove, 6:15 p.m.
    •Game 2: (4) Beecher City vs. (5) Brownstown, 7:45 p.m.

    Wednesday, Dec. 12
    •Game 3: (2) Altamont vs. (7) Ramsey, 6:15 p.m.
    •Game 4: (3) Cowden-Herrick vs. (6) South Central, 7:45 p.m.

  • Vandals get season-opening win at South Central

    FARINA – A five-point possession in the middle of the third quarter was the turning point for Vandalia in a 46-26 victory at South central in Tuesday’s season-opener.

    Senior Tim Ritchey made a 3-pointer but was fouled after the shot, and senior Michael Wells made a second-chance layup on the ensuing possession to give the Vandals a 30-14 lead and control of the game with 3:51 left in the third period.

  • Walmart Gives Ceremonial Scissors to City

    Ken Wample, manager of the Vandalia Walmart, recently presented a pair of ceremonial scissors to Vandalia Mayor Rick Gottman.

    The scissors will be used to cut ribbons at ribbon-cutting ceremonies.

    Bluff employees at Kubota meeting
    Two Bluff Equipment employees and their wives recently attended Kubota Tractor's national dealer's meeting in Dallas.
    Participating in the event were Gail Hall and his wife, Darla, and Bob Langel and his wife, Margaret. They joined more than 1,000 Kubota dealers from across the country to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the company's entry into the U.S. market.
    During the meeting, Hall and Langel attended field demonstrations as well as classroom sessions to gain hands-on experience with Kubota's products.

    The Vandalia Chamber of Commerce last Thursday paid tribute to the owners and managers of businesses that have been launched in Vandalia in the past year.
