  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Dean P. Weller, 22, RR 1, Bingham, was arrested on Jan. 7 on a warrant for a charge of theft. Bond was $10,000, and he was released on a personal recognizance bond.
    • Ashley N. Evans, 20, 1410 W. St. Louis Ave., Apt. E2, Vandalia, was arrested on Jan. 7 on a charge of theft. She was released on a notice to appear in court.
    • John D. Shelton, 30, RR 1, Vandalia, was arrested on Jan. 7 on a felony warrant. Bond was $30,000.

  • FCHD offering free program for women

    The Fayette County Health Department is offering a free, 10-week educational program designed for women 18 and older to encourage healthy choices for a better quality of life.
    The classes will be led by registered nurse Cindy Hof and will be held at the Fayette County Health Department, 416 W. Edwards St. in Vandalia from 6-7 p.m. each Monday evening from Jan. 28-April 8.
    Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

    It is a common and wise practice for a potential buyer of a vehicle to have it checked over by a qualified and knowledgeable person to determine if there are any existing problems or conditions that may cause future problems or safety hazards that would require expensive repairs or replacements.

  • Four-wheelers on dam, panhandlers discussed

    When an alderman brought up a recurring problem at Vandalia Lake at Monday’s city council meeting, the city’s legal counsel suggested one possible way of addressing that problem.
    Alderman Jerry Swarm said that when he and his wife went out to the lake area recently, he noticed four-wheelers tracks on the lake dam hillside.
    Swarm asked what the city could do to address this issue, because driving vehicles on that hillside compromises the integrity of the dam.

  • Road Ranger not buying Travel Center

    Road Ranger has dropped its plans to purchase the FS Travel Center on Vandalia’s west side.
    Byron Sikma, South Central FS chief operating officer, confirmed on Monday that FS had recently received a letter from the company stating that it was not moving forward with the purchase.
    Sikma said that Road Ranger gave no specific reason for that decision, stating simply that it was backing out of the purchase “due to certain events.”

  • Electric bill issue on ballots

    One day after the Vandalia City Council voted to put an electric aggregation on the April 9 consolidated election ballot, the Fayette County Board did the same.
    The city council voted on Monday to both put the issue on the ballot and approve an agreement with Good Energy for professional energy consulting services.
    Good Energy representative Steve Bryant made a presentation to the city council at its Dec. 17 meeting, and to the county board on Tuesday night.
