  • Four Vandal wrestlers qualify for individual state tournament

    VANDALIA - Each grade level will be represented by Vandalia at the Illinois High School Association individual state wrestling tournament, as four Vandals qualified for the event at Saturday's Vandalia Sectional.

    Freshman Chaston Womack (106) and sophomore Dalton Blankenship (138) each were crowned sectional champion, while senior Zach Jackson (160) placed third and junior Tyler Dagen (145) placed fourth.

    The preliminary rounds at state will begin on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in Assembly Hall on the campus of the University of Illinois in Champaign.

  • Mulberry Grove takes third in the state

    The Mulberry Grove seventh-grade boys basketball team placed third in the state on Thursday with a 41-38 win against Chrisman Scottland.

    Four Jr. Eagles scored in double-figures, with Presley Gauch's 11 points leading the team. Cortland Latham, Joey Linnaberry and Javion Wright each scored 10 in the Illinois Elementary Scool Association Class 7-1A state tournament at St. Joseph Middle School.

    No, these are not representatives of an Old West “Longhorn Saloon”-type clientele, but these are the Homestead cow-girls, Betsy, the head cow; Geneva, also known as the Bartels Girl (she originally came from the Gary Bartels’ ranch); “Red,” the rebel; and the red Homestead Heifers, Minny and Mosie.

    She weighed 6 pounds, 15 ounces, and was 20 inches long. She was named Zoey Rylynn. She has two brothers, Liam and Kolby.
    Grandparents are Greg and Angie Rinkel, Penny Donaldson and Fritz Kraemer.
    Clint and Erica Storck are the parents of a daughter born on Jan. 29, 2013.
    She weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces, and was 21 inches long. She was named Zoey Michaele.
    Grandparents are Keith and Jody Storck, and Denton and Darletta Brasel.

    Beauty Bash
    The Kaskaskia College Cosmetology Club invites girls ages 5-12 to a Beauty Bash.
    Parents may make appointments for a two-hour session of beauty and confidence-building with experienced KC cosmetology students.
    Appointments are open on Saturdays, Feb. 9, 16 and 23, and March 2. Start times are 8:30 a.m., 10:45 a.m. and 1 p.m. The cost for the beauty session is $20.
    Those attending the Beauty Bash will receive a full manicure with polish, shampoo, hairstyle with décor and an age-appropriate makeup application.

    Rebecca J. Lester graduated from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on Dec. 15 with a master’s degree in nursing, with a specialization in nurse anesthesia.

    A member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Lester has accepted a position as a certified registered nurse anesthetist with Brigham Anesthesia in Carbondale.
    The daughter of Andy and Jenny Lester of Vandalia, she is a 2003 graduate of Vandalia Community High School and a 2007 graduate of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
