  • Vandals beat Cairo at DuQuoin Tournament

    DUQUOIN - Vandalia was led by a double-double from senior Chase Woolsey and seven different players had at least one assist to lead the Vandals to a 62-56 victory against Cairo in the second game of the DuQuoin Tip-Off Classic.

    The Pilots cut Vandalia's lead to one in the second quarter, but the Vandals (2-1) finished off the first half on an 8-0 run, and continued scoring with regularity for the rest of the game.

  • Lady Vandals suffers overtime loss in tough season-opener

    The Lady Vandals suffered a tough home-opener on Thursday, falling to Gillespie in overtime and possibly losing their point guard for Saturday’s game at Southwestern.

    Junior Megan Godoyo was ejected from the game on a controversial flagrant foul call late in the fourth quarter, and Vandalia would miss 14 free throws in the fourth quarter and overtime period of a 62-60 loss in the South Central Conference opener.

    When a player is ejected, they must sit out their team’s next game, if the ejection is promptly reported.

  • Vandals drop first game of DuQuoin Tip-Off Classic

    On Wednesday, the Vandals lost track of the game after a fast start against Flora.

    Vandalia led by as many as nine points in the first half, but faltered late in the second quarter and throughout the third quarter of a 50-43 victory for Flora.

    The Vandals (1-1) led, 12-7, after the first period and increased that lead in the first half of the second quarter, but Flora closed the first half on a 10-0 run and then outscored Vandalia 29-23 over the final two periods.

  • Edgar – 60 years

    Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Edgar of Vandalia will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary with family.


    The Edgars were married on Dec. 14, 1952, at the bride’s home in Shelbyville.
    They are the parents of three sons: Kim Edgar and his wife Paula of Vandalia, Kevin Edgar and his wife Connie of Vandalia, and Kelly Edgar and his wife Teresa of Greenville.

  • Church Briefs

    Program sends 1,751 shoeboxes

    Operation Christmas Child for Fayette and Montgomery counties this year collected 1,751 shoeboxes for needy children around the world. That was an increase of nearly 240 boxes from last year's total of 1,512.
    Jill Zimmer, who coordinated the local program again this year, said that a variety of participants helped make the program a success. Included in those participants were several individuals, a school class, four businesses and 30 churches.

  • Brownstown seventh-graders going to state tournament

    VANDALIA — The Brownstown Jr. High seventh-grade girls basketball team qualified for the Illinois Elementary School Association Class 3A state tournament with a 24-10 victory against Roxana on Wednesday at the Vandalia Sectional.

    Brownstown led 20-4 going into the fourth quarter on the strength of a strong defensive effort, which included 24 steals, and solid rebounding.

    Dana Shelton led Brownstown with 11 points, while Deana Shelton added 14 rebounds and nine points. Fatima Viramontes had eight steals in the game.

  • Evergreen Outreach

    On Monday, the Evergreen Outreach meeting was blessed by  SoftFire (David and Patricia Pence). They opened the meeting with beautiful, peaceful, soft music from 10 instruments (three saxophones, three trumpets, a French horn, a piccolo, a clarinet and a flugelhorn). Later, they incorporated jingle bells and a tambourine.
