    Murrell performs at UE concert
    The University of Evansville announced that Ian Murrell performed at the Department of Music’s 33rd annual Holiday Pops concert.
    Murrell, a resident of Vandalia, is majoring in music performance.
    Holiday Pops took place on the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 4, in Downtown Evansville’s Victory Theatre. The concert brings together ensembles and soloists, including the university’s choirs, orchestra, and wind and jazz ensembles to perform holiday favorites.

    Michaela Tarr and Nathan Oldfield, both of Lansing, Mich., were united in marriage in a double-ring ceremony at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at Grand Ledge Country Club in Grand Ledge, Mich., with Judge Stewart Newblatt officiating.

    Ruth Murfin
    Ruth Murfin of Vandalia will celebrate her 100th birthday on Dec. 21.
    She was born on Dec. 21, 1912, in Patoka, and she and the late Donald Murfin were married on Jan. 7, 1931, in Carlyle.

  • Tea Party elects officers

    The Effingham area Tea Party elected officers at its meeting last week.
    The new president is Todd Slingerland of Altamont. David Schaefer of Beecher City is the secretary, and Jane Willenborg of Effingham is the returning treasurer.
    The party's next meeting will feature a former Effingham County Board chairman. The topic will be real estate taxes.
    The group meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month at Culver's in Effingham.
    New members are always welcome.

  • Wrestlers lose tough match to Civic Memorial

    The Vandal wrestling team lost a close match to Civic Memorial, 37-36, on Wednesday.

    Vandalia (3-3) earned forfeits in the four heaviest classes, but otherwise only won with pins from Zach Jackson (160) and Jake Stewart (170), two of the team's best wrestlers so far this season.

    The dual was the varsity's final event until the St. Thomas More New Year's Challenge in Champaign on Dec. 27-28.
