  • Vandals Insider: Inexperience shows

    VANDALIA – Despite getting a win last Friday in the season-opener, the Vandals showed their inexperience in the 16-11 victory against Ramsey.

    With just a handful of players with significant playing time at the varsity level, Vandalia coach Luke Hohlt knew coming into the year that there would be come learning curves for his squad.

    “Some decisions, we will have to learn through,” Hohlt said. “The guys will make some bad decisions, but they will have to learn from them, instead of trying fix them immediately.

  • Mother Nature disrupting area's sports teams

    After rain and cold temperatures canceled 33 of the first 40 games for area teams, the snow storm that blasted the area is going to postpone games for at least the next several days.

    Nearly a foot of snow blanketed Fayette County on Sunday, leaving area baseball, softball and track teams again practicing in unnatural surroundings.

    Many games were played last Friday and Saturday before the storm, but through last Thursday, just seven games had been played, including none for South Central, Patoka or Brownstown.

  • Lady Vandals drop home-opener, 6-0

    VANDALIA – Senior Paige Ehrat continued her torrid start at the plate, but the Lady Vandals were overmatched by an out-of-state opponent in last Friday’s home-opener.

    Ehrat was 2-for-3 with two doubles, but Vandalia wasn’t able to get a run across in a 6-0 loss to Plymouth, Wisc., a team that made a stop here during its spring trip.

    Through three games, Ehrat is hitting .625 with three extra-base hits for the Lady Vandals (0-3).

    Vandalia sophomore Ben Strobel finished 11th in the 1,600-meter run at Saturday's Class 1A Illinois Prep Top Times meet in Bloomington.

    Held in the Shirk Fieldhouse on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University, Strobel finished the race in 4:47.67 to place four positions higher than he was seeded.

    The Top Times meet is known as the unofficial indoor state championship meet.

  • Area Prep Roundup (March 28)

    Mulberry Grove senior Becca Oldham fired her second no-hitter of the season on Saturday against St. Anthony.

    Oldham struck out nine Lady Bulldogs, and her only blemish in the 15-0 victory was a walk issued in the second inning. She tossed a perfect game against Sandoval in the season-opener.

    Offensively, the Lady Aces scored in just two innings, bringing home six runs in the third and nine in the fifth.

    Kate Jolliff homered, and freshman Lauren Robison reached base four times and scored three runs for Mulberry Grove (2-0).

  • Wehrle is eighth at state meet

    Vandalia Jr. Wrestling Club member Jarek Wehrle went 3-3 to place eighth at the Illinois Midget Championships in Danville.

    After receiving a bye in the Midget 60 division, Wehrle wrestled to six decisions, none of which had a margin of fewer than five points.

    Also wrestling for Vandalia was Kyle Miller.

    Miller, wrestling in the Midget 60 division, went 3-2, but did not place in the event.

    He recorded two pins, both coming in under a minute.

  • Deadline for YMCA dodgeball is Saturday

    The deadline to register for the Family YMCA of Fayette County's youth dodgeball league is Saturday.

    Children in grades 3-8 may register for the league, which begins play on April 9.

    The registration cost is $15 for members and $30 for nonmembers.

    The league will be split into  grades 3-5 and grades 6-8.

    Games will be played on Tuesdays and Thursday, with the grade 3-5 games from 5:30-6:30 p.m., and the grade 6-8 games from 6:30-7:30 p.m.

    Games will be played on April 9, 11, 16, 18, 23 and 25.

  • 'A Night of Music' changed to Tuesday
