  • City asks that two blocks of Gallatin be opened up

    Despite the fact that work on the downtown enhancement project has been halted by the weather, it remains months ahead of schedule.

    But that’s no comfort to the merchants in the two blocks of Gallatin Street where the finished roadway remains closed to traffic.

    Prior to Monday’s city council meeting, Alderman Dean Black approached Mayor Rick Gottman about remedying that situation.

  • Police alert residents of burglaries, ask for help

    The cold weather doesn’t seem to be having much of an effect on criminals.

    The Vandalia Police Department has been handling a number of burglary reports in recent weeks, and it’s asking for the public’s help in apprehending the criminals.

    Chief Larry Eason reported on Monday that his officers had handled three reports of burglaries and three more attempted burglaries.

    On Jan. 1, police received a report that someone had broken into a storage shed on a Vandalia Lake lot and taken an unknown number of power tools.

  • Altamont beats Brownstown for third straight St. Elmo title

    Brownstown and Altamont gave the crowd in St. Elmo’s gymnasium a championship game worthy of the 50th annual St. Elmo Holiday Tournament on Saturday.

    The two teams battled for four quarters, with Altamont pulling off the victory, thanks to a strong performance in the fourth quarter. The Indians held the Bombers to only one point in the final quarter to get the 63-42 victory.

    “We played pretty well, we just got a little impatient,” Brownstown coach Terry Pruemer said.

  • Flora and Stew-Stras headed to the championship

    Pool play for the 38th annual Vandalia Holiday Tournament came to a close Tuesday night. The tournament started with a couple of upsets, but by the end the pieces had fallen into place. The best two teams are headed to the title game, while the worst two are headed to the ninth-place game, trying to earn their first victory of the tournament. It’s only fitting that Flora and Stew-Stras the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds will face off in the title game. The two were tied for points after coach voting prior to the tournament.

  • BREAKING NEWS: Vandalia beats South Central to place ninth at VHT

    Vandalia picked up its first and only win of the 38th annual Vandalia Holiday Tournament on Wednesday afternoon against Fayette County foe, South Central, 59-39.

    The Vandals were lead by Marty Johnson with 16 points.

    Vandalia was getting production from all over the court from the early minutes on. Daniel Bell knocked down back-to-back shots to the start of the second quarter, putting Vandalia up 20-11.

  • Voter deadlines for Feb. 2 election approaching

    Though a number of local and state offices won’t be filled through election more than 10 months from now, those wishing to have a say in who’s elected need to make sure right now that they are eligible to vote.

    Next Tuesday is the final day that Fayette County residents may register to vote or transfer their registration for the Feb. 2 primary election.

  • Recycling continues to be popular

    The efforts of a committee heading up recycling drives in Fayette County continue to be well-received.

    “We collected more at the last two drives than we did at the first one,” said Tony Pals of the Fayette County Soil & Water Conservation District.

    At the Dec. 12 drive, 18 large boxes of recyclable items were collected, three more than at the initial drive, Pals said.

  • Statehouse among 'Build Your Own Lincoln Sites' scale models

    Anyone with a computer, printer, scissors and glue can now be the proud owner of five new scale models of Abraham Lincoln sites, including the Vandalia Statehouse, joining five other scale models that debuted earlier this year.

    The Illinois Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Commission’s “Build Your Own Lincoln Sites” project now offers HO-scale models of the Lincoln Home and Lincoln Tomb, both in Springfield; Beecher Hall in Jacksonville; the Shastid Cabin in Pittsfield; and the Vandalia Statehouse.

  • Anthony Workman has a new start with a new heart

    Anthony Workman was a typical 16-year-old boy who enjoyed baseball and other outdoor activities, especially hunting.

    Then he had a bout with a virus that changed his life about a year ago. It left Anthony with marked physical changes, such as tiredness, weakness and a feeling of always being cold, even during hot weather. His dad described him as boy formerly built like a football player who suddenly began losing weight.
