    Mr. and Mrs. David Hill of Vandalia will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sunday, Oct. 28.

    The open house, hosted by their children, will be held from 2-4 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church, located northwest of Vandalia on Ill. Route 185. The couple requests no gifts.
    David Hill, son of the late Orville and Goldie Hill, and Esther Murphy, daughter of the late Willie and Mabel Murphy, were married on Oct. 20, 1962, at First Baptist Church in Ramsey.

    Amber McNeely and Gabe Boatman have announced their engagement and upcoming marriage.


    The future bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John McNelly.
    She is a 2008 graduate of Vandalia Community High School and is employed at United Stationers in Greenville.
    The future groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Van Boatman.
    He is a 2004 graduate of Vandalia Community High School and is employed at VanSeal in Vandalia.
    The couple will be married in a 4 p.m. ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 27, at Crown Point Church in rural Vandalia.

    Vandalia graduate Kyle Hawkins and Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville's club baseball team will take on Indiana State University at Vandalia Mutual Field on Saturday at noon.

    Mr. and Mrs. Joe Nave of Ramsey will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary with a family gathering.


    Joe Nave and Vivian Ulbricht were married on Oct. 19, 1947.
    He is an Army veteran and is retired from Ramsey National Bank in Ramsey. She is a homemaker.
    They are the parents of two daughters, Judy Roberts and Sharon Stanbery, both of Vandalia.
    They have four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

  • Seven pick up petitions for city election

    With the filing period two months away, seven individuals have expressed an interest in holding posts in Vandalia government, six of those being incumbents.
    Of the seven who have picked up nominating petitions, the only non-incumbent is Brian Stout, who has announced that he will oppose Rick Gottman in the mayoral race. Gottman has announced he will seek a fourth term as mayor.
    The other incumbents who have picked up nominating petitions include Peggy Bowen, who is completing her fourth term as city clerk.

  • Vandalia School District sees financial score drop

    The Vandalia School District’s financial profile score dropped from 3.6 on a scale of 4.0 last year to 3.25 for the year that ended June 30, a decrease that moved the district from a “recognition” to a “review” rating from the Illinois State Board of Education.
    The announcement of the score was part of the district’s annual auditor’s report, which was presented Tuesday’s monthly meeting of the Vandalia Board of Education.
    And it’s a shift that Superintendent Rich Well says is easily explained.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Leandra K. Brewer, 29, RR 2, Ramsey, was arrested on Oct. 15 on a Bond County warrant for a charge of deceptive practices. Bond was $100 cash.
    • Donald W. Britton, 51, Effingham, was arrested on Oct. 15 on a domestic battery warrant and an Edwards County warrant. Bond was $10,000.
    • David E. Ivey, 30, 1502 N. Eighth St., Apt. 19, Vandalia, was arrested on Oct. 15 on a charge of domestic battery. No bond information was listed.

  • Alderman shows initiative

    Vandalia officials learned on Monday night that their hopes for a quick, simple and inexpensive fix to the ongoing problem with the city’s raw water intake on the Kaskaskia River had been dashed.
    But the failure to find such a fix wasn’t due to a lack of effort.
    At some point, it may be worth it for the city to fix the problem, though the need to do so may be moot if the city can work out an agreement with the Kaskaskia Springs Water Co. that is cost-effective.
