  • Coloring Contest Winners

    Pictured here are the three winners of the holiday coloring contest sponsored by The Leader-Union and 16 area business.

    In the first photo is Sara Blackburn, age 4. In the second photo is Katelyn Koontz, 8 1/2. In the third photo is Abby Guffey, 7. Each of the winners received a $10 Family Video gift card.

    Lyndsay Evans and Anthony Lach have announced their engagement and upcoming wedding.

  • HCE Donates to Lighthouse Pregnancy Center

    Patricia Farris (left), executive director of the Lighthouse Pregnancy Center, accepts a donation from the chairwoman of the HCE Vandalia Day Unit, Debbie Segrest, and a member of that unit, Carrie Hill.

    The HCE members voted to each make a $5 donation in lieu of a Christmas gift exchange.

  • Wedding Reception

    A reception for Mr. and Mrs. Charles Forbes, who were united in marriage on Nov. 26 in Glenview, will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22, at Bethel Baptist Church, which is located on Ill. Route 185 northwest of Vandalia.
    In lieu of gifts, the couple is requesting donations to the Lighthouse Pregnancy Center in Vandalia.

    Carol Ann Reuscher of Vandalia and Kyle McCollum of Charleston were united in marriage in a ceremony at 2 p.m. on July 9, 2011, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Vandalia, with the Rev. Peter Kolb officiating.

    Amanda Burchett and Travis Torbeck, both of Collinsville, were united in marriage in a ceremony at 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 17, 2011, at Patriots Park in Greenville, with the Rev. Darryl Bolen officiating.

    The bride is the daughter of the late Doyle Burchett and Patricia Richter of Greenville.
    She was given in marriage by her stepfather, Clinton “Mick” Richter.
    The bride chose her sister, Tamara Austin of Tuscon, Ariz., as her maid of honor.
    The groom is the son of Scott and Karen Torbeck of St. Peter.

  • Master Gardener deadline is Thursday

    If you have an interest in gardening and want to learn more about gardening, fruit trees and how to manage insect pests, then you may want to check out the University of Illinois Extension’s Master Gardener program.
    More than 3,500 master gardeners across Illinois volunteer in their community and share their knowledge with others through their local Extension office.
    Master gardeners are an important part of the educational mission of local University of Illinois Extension offices.

    Winterizing the Chicken Roost
    With the temperatures taking a dip well below freezing, snowflakes drifting down and around, and the strong, cold, winds penetrating the surrounding timber, it was time to turn the heat on (not the oven or roaster), for the girls, Blackie and Rhonda (hens).
    Papa Bear Bill bought them a brand new heat bulb and the roost is now much warmer.  
    The other outdoors critters seem to be making it OK, with new, fresh bedding put down in their barn.
