  • Drone retires: Wollerman is new ROE superintendent

    Mark Drone, superintendent of Regional Office of Education No. 3 since May 2004, announced his retirement at Thursday's meeting of the Fayette County Board.

    Drone said that Friday was his last day on the job, and that Julie Wollerman, who has been serving as the assistant regional superintendent, will take over as the regional superintendent on Monday.

  • Jr. Legion team wins tense game at Districts; will play Friday at 7:30 p.m.

    Vandalia Jr. Legion coach TK Kinkead went straight to his ace in the first game of the District Tournament in Salem on Thursday, and Post 95 was rewarded with its first tourney win in several years.

    Connor Beasley struck out nine during a complete-game effort and Matt Campbell made a run-saving catch in the bottom of the seventh inning to help Vandalia secure a 2-1 victory against Salem.

  • Friday, 8:25 a.m.-Fire damages vacant home

    A fire late Thursday evening caused substantial damage to a vacant house in Vandalia.

    Vandalia firefighters were called to 203 W. Main St. shortly after 10 a.m., and were at the scene for more than 2 1/2 hours.

    An investigator with the Office of the State Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate the blaze.

    The Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department received mutual aid assistance from Brownstown and Ramsey firefighters.

    Since it has been so very hot and humid, Callie, the kitty, and Josie, the 11-year-old puppy, are staying in the house most of the time, going outside for brief visits only when necessary.

    On Saturday, July 2, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Maske of Mt. Pulaski, formerly of St. Paul, attended the wedding of their grandson, Daniel Maske, and Jennifer Neuendorf at Concordia University Chapel in Ann Arbor, Mich.
    Daniel is the son of the Rev. Steven and Andrea Maske. Steven is the pastor at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Flint, Mich.
    Jennifer is the daughter of the Rev. Donald and Karen Neuendorf of Ann Arbor, Mich. Reverend Neuendorf is the pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ann Arbor.

  • Evergreen Outreach

    We were back at Vandalia Long Term Care for Evergreen Outreach this week. It was a very hot day, with temperatures soaring near 100 degrees.
    However, the heat did not keep a group from FAYCO or those in attendance from the Long Term Care facility from coming and having fun.
    Phyllis Thoman’s music was being enjoyed as the room began to fill with the many guests. She played lovely songs, such as, “It Is No Secret.”

    Revival Run to be held this Saturday
    Liberty Christian Church will be holding its annual Revival Run this Saturday, beginning at 7 a.m.
    The event includes a four-mile competitive run or a two-mile fun walk.
    Participants can register the day of the race, beginning at 6:30 a.m., or pre-register by calling Erin Schaub at 267-9512. Her e-mail address is erinbeth75@hotmail.com. The registration fee is $20.
    Pre-registered participants will receive a T-shirt.
    All proceeds will benefit Liberty Christian Church youth groups.
