  • FOOTBALL PREVIEW: Week 1 at EAWR

    The Vandalia High School football team on Friday night opens its season at East Alton-Wood River.

    Vandalia, which finished last season 4-5 and defeated the Oiliers, 24-21, with a last-second field goal in week one, return several starters this season, including senior running back Levi Ulmer and senior linebacker Blake Mills.

    They, combined with the rest of the veterans, are expected to build a strong core that will allow the Vandals to better their 2010 record and move back into the top half of the South Central Conference.

  • Beginning quilting class at KC Vandalia

    The Kaskaskia College Office of Continuing/Community Education will offer a beginning quilting class at the Vandalia Campus.
    This class will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning Aug. 31 and ending Sept. 14. The registration number is COED 5440 VA01D.
    This class will examine all of the necessary tools for hand- and machine-piecing of quilt blocks. Each week, the tools and their use will be demonstrated, as well as students putting the cut fabric pieces into a block.

  • KC to offer CNA class at Vandalia Campus

    Kaskaskia College will offer a certified nurse assistant class at Vandalia Campus.
    The classes will be held Monday and Wednesday evenings, as well as Saturdays, beginning Sept. 7 and ending Nov. 21.
    Class sessions will be held from 5-8:30 p.m. on Mondays; 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday; and from 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Saturdays.   The six clinical days may be different than regular class days and times.
    The nurse assistant course is a seven credit hour class that includes classroom and laboratory experiences.

    Ehrat on Millikin
    dance team

    The Millikin University dance team, "The Sapphires," earned two awards at the recent Universal Dance Association College Camp, qualifying them for the UDA Nationals.
    The Sapphires won a second-place trophy for home routine and earned a superior trophy for overall performance.
    The members of the team include Ellie Ehrat of Shobonier, a 2011 graduate of Vandalia Community High School.

    Catholic women to hold deanery meeting

    The Diocesan Council of Catholic Women of the Litchfield Deanery will meet this Thursday at Saints Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Gillespie. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by Mass at 10 a.m., a business meeting and a luncheon.
    Carlos Tejeda, associate director for the Office of Marriage & Family Life of the Springfield Diocese, will be the speaker at the luncheon. His topic will be "The Value of Marriage and Family Life."

    COUNTRY Financial is ranked No. 1 with the lowest complaint ratio among Illinois auto and life insurers in 2010, according to the Illinois Department of Insurance.
    COUNTRY has had the lowest auto complaint ratio for 11 of the past 12 years. For every $1 million in written auto premiums, it had .04 complaints, the lowest among the report's other 50 insurers.
