  • Remember our veterans on Nov. 11

    Directly on the heels of Tuesday’s election day, we’ll observe Veterans Day on Sunday. Though they are very different days, they’re bound together by a common theme.
    Both are centered on a key element of our nation: freedom.
    Our elections are a key element in preserving our democracy. We’re free to vote our conscience in our elections – whether it’s in the presidential race or in the most obscure local position on the ballot.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Bernie R. Wideman, 59, Donnellson, was arrested on Oct. 6 for failure to appear in court on a charge of theft. Bond was $10,000.
    • Melvin C. Eller, 30, RR 1, Ramsey, was arrested on Nov. 5 on a charge of retail theft (two counts). Bond was $1,000.
    • Shawn E. Allen, 32, RR 1, Ramsey, was arrested on Nov. 5 for failure to appear in court on a small claims matter. Bond was $70 cash.
    • Amber N. Ashworth, 24, 1603 W. Madison St., Vandalia, was arrested on Nov. 5 on a warrant for retail theft. Bond was $2,500.

  • Casting Their Ballots

  • Council backs no levy increase

    The Vandalia City Council will likely approve a tax levy for the coming year that does not include any increases.
    Mayor Rick Gottman told aldermen that they have two options for the new levy – leave it as is; or OK an increase of 5 percent.
    Gottman and Executive Secretary LaTisha Paslay said that the option with no increase includes a reduction of the police pension figure – due to retirements and other departures – and an equal increase in the fire protection figure.

  • City learns about water plant issues

    The Vandalia City Council approved on Monday a quick, short-term fix to the city’s water treatment plant.
