    Mason Mark Schaub
    John and Jacy Schaub of Vandalia are the parents of a boy born at 7:14 p.m. on Monday, March 14, 2011, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese.

    He weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces and was 20 inches long. He was named Mason Mark.
    He has three brothers, 11-year-old Cole and Nathan and 5-year-old Cade.
    Grandparents are Delmar and Kim Miller, and Paul and Becky Schaub, all of Brownstown.
    Great-grandparents are Doris Kern and Mary Reams.

    This week’s Mystery Banks Photo: The photo of this young Vandalia girl was taken in either 1955 or 1956. She is tied to the Vandalia School District, and her husband is well-known "man about town." One of their children is a Vandalia school teacher, and the other is a nurse in St. Louis. Shown behind her is her brother, who now lives in Texas.

    1996 – A letter of intent was signed for the sale of Witte Hardware Corp., operator of a distribution center in Vandalia, to Orgill Corp., an independent hardware distributor based in Memphis, Tenn.
    Alicia Gerkin and Jay Keppler were crowned queen and king at the Vandalia Community High School prom.
    Members of Soroptimist International of Vandalia were to canvass the downtown business district over the weekend to plant flowers in barrels as part of its “Bloom in Historic Vandalia” program.

  • Those who have served deserve our thanks

    You can either stand on the sidelines all of your life, questioning and complaining about the decisions made by those who represent us on local governmental entities. Or, you can choose to get involved, either though an election or by appointment, by serving on one of those entities.
    On Monday night, Vandalia Mayor Rick Gottman honored several individuals who fall into the second category – Lisa McNutt, Larry Bennett, Bret Brosman and Larry Cable.

  • Boggs was a part of Civil War ironclads

    James A. Boggs stood before the judge of the Fayette County courts on Nov. 2, 1880, and, raising his right hand, renounced all fealty to Queen Victoria of Great Britain and solemnly swore that he would support the Constitution of the United States.
    Boggs, a native of Nova Scotia, stated that he had lived in the United States for 38 years and, in the fall of 1861, enlisted in the Army, serving his term aboard the gunboat Louisville on the Mississippi River.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log-April 21

    • Michael D. Tucker, 44, Springfield, was arrested on April 19 for failure to appear in court on a charge of deceptive practices. Bond was $3,000.
    • William R. Wallace, 45, Granite City, was arrested on April 19 on a charge of escape and for failure to appear in court on a charge of aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol. Bond was $150,000.
    • Robert E. Scrimpsher, 38, 1036 W. St. Louis Ave., Apt. 3, Vandalia, was arrested on April 18 for failure to appear in court on an ordinance violation charge. Bond was $1,000.
