  • UPDATE: Two Lady Bombers in state 3-point showdown

    Two Brownstown girls basketball players have reached the state level in the 3-point showdown, but neither of them were able to advance to the finals.

    Junior Danie Austin and sophomore Audriana Pruett shot with the best in the state on Thursday, with Austin making one 3 and Pruett making seven. Nine makes were needed to make the finals.

    The event took place at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University in Normal.

  • Area's Class 1A teams all eliminated at regionals

    The three remaining Class 1A schools in the area were all eliminated on Wednesday.

    At the St. Elmo Regional, St. Elmo lost to Nokomis, 37-35.

    At the Woodlawn Regional, Patoka lost to Christ Our Rock Lutheran, 51-49, and South Central lost to Woodlawn, 54-25.

  • Vandals reach regional championship game

    The Vandals have reached the regional championship game for the second straight season after defeating sixth-seeded Hillsboro, 62-52, on Wednesday.

    No. 2 Vandalia will meet top-seeded Teutopolis at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Hillsboro High School. The Wooden Shoes defeated the Vandals earlier this season, when Vandalia allowed a big run in the third quarter after getting within two points.

    • Isac L. Fancher, 35, rural Edgewood, was arrested on Feb. 19 on an Effingham County warrant for a charge of aggravated batter.y Bond was $75,000.
    • Brandon E. Durre, 21, Altamont, was arrested on Feb. 17 for failure to appear in court on a charge of reckless driving. Bond was $1,500.
    • Jody L. Richards, 46, 922 W. Tower St., Vandalia, and Steven F. Stokes, 29, 1500 N. Sixth St., Vandalia, were arrested on charges of methamphetamine, meth precursor or anhydrous ammonia trafficking and possession of cannabis. Bond for each was $25,000.

    CARLINVILLE – The Vandals closed the regular season last Friday with another disappointing loss, leaving them at 1-5 in the final six games.
    Coach Brian Buscher said after a 69-63 South Central Conference loss at Carlinville that despite the poor record – and at times, poor play – he wouldn’t change the way the year ended.
