  • Seventh-graders lose hard-fought sectional contest

    DIVERNON  — The Vandalia seventh-grade boys basketball team never let up in Wednesday's sectional game, but hot shooting from Southwestern allowed the Birds to come away with a 44-37 victory.

    Nathan Casey led the Jr. Vandals (16-9) in scoring with a game-high 18 points, and Marcus Zimmerman added 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals.

    Vandalia led 15-13 early in the second quarter, but Southwestern (22-3) used a 10-0 run over the final 2:48 to take a 23-15 halftime lead.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Shirley J. Johnston, 40, 2311 W. St. Clair St., Vandalia, was arrested on Jan. 28 on a warrant for burglary. Bond was $10,000.
    • Mary V. Steele, 55, 1410 W. St. Louis Ave., Vandalia, was arrested on Jan. 28 on an alleged Bond County probation violation. Bond was $250 cash, and she was transferred to Bond County.
    • Robert D. Taylor, 28, 223 N. Sixth St., Vandalia, was arrested on Jan. 27 for failure to appear in court. Bond was $150 cash.

    20 Years Ago

    1993 – Mike Baker, a former assistant warden at the Vandalia Correctional Center, was appointed to the warden’s post at VCC by the Illinois Department of Corrections. Austin Randolph Jr. was named assistant warden of operations.
    The Vandalia Lady Vandals defeated state-ranked Breese Mater Dei, 49-45, recording their first win over that school in girls basketball.
    Dannon Cole of Vandalia was given honorable mention honors as an NAIA Division II All-American. He was a defensive back at Greenville College.
