  • Patoka's Labor Day Celebration

    The village of Patoka offered a wide variety of activities and attractions over the weekend as part of its Labor Day Celebration.

    In the first photo, Mary Ann Hinkel calls out the numbers for bingo on Saturday afternoon. The village's holiday schedule was altered by heavy rain on Saturday; the second photo shows celebration attendees running for cover as a storm arrives on Saturday afternoon.

    Though the sound of the horses’ hooves and stagecoach wheels turning have faded long ago into our heritage and history, the stories and memories handed down through the ages have preserved at least a glimpse into those days.

  • Water hike a possibility

    Vandalia residents could see their water and sewer bills increasing by about 2 percent in the coming year.
    That’s if the city council agrees to let a city ordinance automatically kick in a rate increase for water service.
    In presenting the city’s audit for the past fiscal year, Dale Timmermann of Timmermann & Co. Ltd. gave the council on Tuesday figures on the city’s water and sewer expenses for the year ending April 30.

  • Audit: City's finances improved

    By making some tough decisions, Vandalia officials improved the city’s financial situation substantially in the last fiscal year, the city’s auditor said on Tuesday.
    However, Dale Timmermann told the city council, they need to be aware that the city will have some large expenses coming in the future.
    Timmermann, who heads up the local CPA firm Timmermann & Co. Ltd., reported that the city ended the last fiscal year on April 30 with revenues exceeding expenses by $344,138.

  • Bid awarded for streetscape work

    A Raymond firm will do streetscape work on at least one side street in downtown Vandalia.
    Kinney Contractors submitted the low bid of $931,894.96 for improvements in the downtown business district that are being funded solely with grant funds from the state.
    Kinney was one of three bidders for the work, with Killian Corp. of Mascoutah bidding $963,826.90 and Sangamo Construction Co. of Springfield submitting a bid of $1,034,881.59.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Kristina A. Loftis, 21, 360 W. Cumberland Road, Brownstown, was arrested on Sept. 3 on a charge of battery. Bond was $1,000.
    • Sonja S. Doggett, 18, RR 2, Mulberry Grove, was arrested on Sept. 2 on a charge of burglary. No bond information was listed on the arrest log.
    • A 15-year-old Odin resident was arrested on Sept. 2 on a charge of residential burglary. No bond information was listed on the arrest log.

    Copies of 2012 Vandalois have arrived

    The Vandalia Community High School Vandalois staff has announced that the 2012 yearbooks have arrived and will be handed out between 11-15 a.m. and 12:45 next Tuesday (Sept. 4) through Thursday in the VCHS cafeteria.
    They may also be picked up by calling the VCHS office, 283-5155, or by e-mailing adviser Amy Vieregge at avieregge@vandals.k.12.il.us.
