    1996 – The Vandalia City Council voted to pay $260,000 for 26.08 acres of land east of Owens-Brockway and south of John Crane, with plans to give part of that land to Signature Label to retain the local industry.
    The Vandalia Community High School band and band instructor, Sean Reed-Bippen, went to the Vandalia Moose Lodge to record their halftime show for a compact disc. VCHS was one of seven schools chosen for the CD.

    In celebration of the upcoming bicentennial celebration of the War of 1812, I have been working on a project to identify all known veterans of that war who died in Fayette County.

    For nearly a century, Americans have paused on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month to honor and thank the nation’s military personnel for their sacrifices to preserve our freedom.
    Friday is that day.
    We join with citizens all across the United States in saying thanks to our veterans. Their unselfish service to our country – in times of conflict as well as peace – has kept our military presence strong and our nation free.

    FCHD to train hospice volunteers

    The Fayette County Health Department will be holding a hospice volunteer training class on Friday, Nov. 18, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the health department building, which is located at 416 W. Edwards St. in Vandalia.
    In that training, participants will learn how to provide support for terminally ill people and their families.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log-Nov. 10, 2011

    • A 15-year-old youth was arrested on Nov. 8 on charges of possession of drug equipment, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of less than 2.5 grams of cannabis. The youth was released on a notice to appear in court.
    • Michael E. Tessman, 55, RR 2, Brownstown, turned himself in on Nov. 7 on a warrant for failure to appear in court on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol. Bond was $5,000.

  • Avenue of Flags volunteers needed

    Crawford-Hale American Legion Post 95 of Vandalia will put out its Avenue of Flags display this Friday, but post members need some help in doing so.
    Residents who wish to help putting out the American flags are to report to the Legion Home, 321 S. Seventh St., by 6 a.m.
    Breakfast will be served to volunteers after the flags are put out.
