  • Vandalia Police

    March 28
    • An officer responded at 12:42 p.m. to a complaint of a dog running loose in the 100 block of North Hudson Street. An officer left an ordinance warning at a residence in that block.
    • An officer responded at 1:23 p.m. to Vandalia Junior High School for a report of a fight. A juvenile was issued a ticket for fighting at school.
    • Officers responded at 3:48 p.m. to a report of a suicidal individual at Travelodge. A male individual was taken by ambulance to Fayette County Hospital for treatment.

  • Olympian Visits BES

    Lance Brooks, a New Berlin High School graduate who is working his way to the summer Olympics this summer, visited with Brownstown Elementary School students last Wednesday.

    He is third in the USA and among the top 24 in the world at throwing the discus. Students were allowed to purchase T-shirts and have them signed by him to help support his journey to the Olympics. He is shown signing the shirt of fifth-grader Dalton Grames.

    Cleanup day in Farina planned

    The village of Farina is gearing up for a spring cleanup day in the community, with the main focus being picking up litter along the highway and streets, and in the village parks.
    Volunteers will be asked to meet at the city park on U.S. Route 57. Volunteers will be needed to walk cleanup routes, man staging areas and dispense water.
    The village will provide trash bags and drinking water.

    20 Years Ago

    1992 – As last week’s temperatures dipped below freezing, swelling peach buds – caught off guard by the unseasonably warm weather during most of March – succumbed to the harsh cold.
    The trial for a Bluff City man, Stuart Wayne Heaton, charged with the stabbing murder of a Ramsey girl, Krystal Lynn Naab, was scheduled to begin next week.
    An ammonia feed system is now removing an unhealthy byproduct from the city’s water supply.

  • Our sports facilities are second to none

    As the spring sports seasons get under way, one thing will be apparent to anyone who attends baseball, softball or track contests in Vandalia.
    That one thing is that Vandalia now has some of the best facilities in the area. It's notable because not long ago, all three of those facilities were among the worst that Vandal athletes encountered during their season.

  • Maddox House was social center of town

    The Maddox House on Gallatin Street was a social center of capital-era Vandalia,  and was known far and wide as one of the best hotels in the state.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Kendan S. Worley, 33, Croydon, Pa., was arrested on March 26 on charges of driving while his license is suspended or revoked and speeding. Bond was $1,500.
    • Crystal N. Smith, 24, Salem, was arrested on March 25 on possession of up to 30 grams of cannabis and on an Effingham County warrant. Bond was $15,000.
    • Vincent B. Casseday, 44, Kinmundy, was arrested on March 25 on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage and illegal squealing of tires. Bond was $3,000.
