    Reported sports cancellations for May 3 are listed below.

    Vandalia baseball and softball against Litchfield have been canceled for Friday. There will not be a makeup date for the games. Thursday's games against Pana will also not be rescheduled.

    St. Elmo baseball vs. South Central has been canceled for Friday.

    Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville
    Newly installed Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Chancellor Julie Furst-Bowe will oversee her first spring commencement this Friday and Saturday.
    Ceremonies for the 1,886 eligible graduates will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Friday in the Vadalabene Center on campus.
    The festivities begin Friday night with the Graduate School, School of Business and School of Nursing students receiving their degrees.

  • Kaskaskia College

    Small engine repair class
    The Kaskaskia College Office of Continuing/Community Education will offer a small engine repair class to be held at the Okaw Area Vocational Center in Vandalia.
    This class will be held Saturday, May 11, from 8 a.m.-noon. The registration number for the class is COED 8015 VA01W.
    This course will help prepare small engines for the warm weather. The class will teach basic maintenance, preventive maintenance and troubleshooting, starting with preventive maintenance of a small engine and then going into troubleshooting and repairing.

  • Maxey president of St. Elmo board

    Kevin Maxey was elected president of the St. Elmo Board of Education as the board reorganized last Monday.
    Chad Wilhour was elected vice president of the board, Andra Carson was elected secretary, and Marcia Heckert was appointed as district treasurer.
    During the meeting, Superintendent Deb Philpot reported that the Altamont district has approached the St. Elmo district about initiating consolidation discussions. The board agreed to meet with Altamont representatives to discuss the topic.

  • 'Drive One for Your School' in Farina

    South Central High School is joining with Engel Brothers Ford in Farina for "Drive One for Your School" this Saturday.
    From 9 a.m.-4 p.m., each person test-driving a Ford at the dealership will raise money for the school.
