    Evergreen Outreach met at Fayette County Hospital's Long Term Care this week.
    Bemie Ray was seated at the piano playing beautiful songs from a list she had made. She needed no music sheets, but played the following from memory: “Love Letters in the Sand," "Alice Blue Gown," "Ole Shanty Town" and "Down Mexico Way."

    Russell 'Burwin' Merriman
    Family members and friends are invited to an open house on Saturday, Jan. 28, to celebrate the 90th birthday of Russell "Burwin" Merriman.
    The open house will be held from 1:30-3 p.m. at St. Agnes Parish Center in Hillsboro. The parish center is located next to St. Agnes Catholic Church.

    The VFW Post 3862 Auxiliary in Vandalia participated in the national Wreaths Across America program.

  • Planning for Relay for Life begins

    Twenty-five people attended the Relay For Life rally on Jan. 9 held at Joe’s Pizza.
    The theme of this year’s walk, which will be held June 2-3 at Rogier Park in Vandalia, will be “Rockin’ For a Cure.”
    Currently, 11 teams have signed up to raise funds for the Relay for Life.
    This year’s goal is $65,000, and $12,500 has been raised to date.
    Anyone interested in forming a team or assisting with the event is encouraged to contact Dave Rickman at 283-7066.

  • Thomason to compete at state pageant

    The IAAF Convention will be held Jan. 19-23 at the Crowne Plaza in Springfield. At this convention, county fair officials can get ideas and book events for their 2012 fair.

  • Early Lambs Arriving

    A week-old lamb on the farm of Lynn Wollerman northwest of Vandalia munches on a piece of straw as it explores its new surroundings.

    The lambing season will begin in earnest in late January and into February.

    The Illinois Field Office of NASS last week released the USDA’s annual crop production summary, winter wheat seedings and grain stocks report. State highlights of the reports include:

  • Farm Briefs

    Risk management meetings planned
    Farmers interested in receiving a checkup on their risk management plans are invited to attend one of two upcoming meetings in the Central Illinois area.
    Meetings will be held on Jan. 31 at the Holiday Inn in Mt. Vernon and on Feb. 1 at the Northfield Suites in Springfield. Both meetings begin at 5 p.m., cost $19 and include a ribeye steak dinner.
