  • Sports Briefs (Nov. 17)

    Club volleyball tryout is on Sunday

    Club volleyball tryouts for girls ages 15-17 will be held at the Vandalia Community High School gym on Sunday at 2 p.m.

    The tryout is being run by Carla Huhn.

    Hunting season begins on Friday

    The first firearm deer hunting season is this Friday through Sunday.

    Times for hunting are 30 minutes before sunrise until 30 minutes after sunset.

    The second firearm season and the first muzzleloader season will be held from Dec. 1-4.

  • NEW: Committee meeting on leaf burning is Tuesday

    The Vandalia City Council's streets committee will meet at 4 p.m. this Tuesday at city hall to discuss leaf burning.

    The meeting is open to the public, with residents being allowed to voice their opinions on leaf burning in the community.

    Mayor Rick Gottman asked the committee to hold a meeting on the issue after receiving several complaints about leaf burning.

  • VFW will again lay veterans' wreaths

    Wreath Across America will be held on Dec. 10, and the VFW Auxiliary at Old Capitol Post 3862 in Vandalia will participate in the event for the second consecutive year.
    There are 97 graves in the veterans’ plot at Fairlawn Cemetery in Vandalia, and many more veterans' graves in local cemeteries.
    The local VFW Auxiliary will put out 120 wreaths from last year, as well as more wreaths from this year’s donations.
    Members of the VFW Auxiliary will be at Fairlawn Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Dec. 10.

    Pvt. Eric S. Halleman
    Army National Guard Pvt. Eric S. Halleman has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.

    Amanda Kay Patterson and Shaye Michael Pommer, both of Mulberry Grove, were united in marriage in a double-ring ceremony at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3, at Hazlet State Park in Carlyle, with Haron Denton of Vandalia officiating.

  • St. Elmo Soldier

    Staff Sgt. Ryan K. Howell (right), squad leader, Regional Command (South) protective service detail, 82nd Airborne Division, from St. Elmo, looks over weapons with an Afghan Border Patrol soldier during a mission on Nov. 2.

    Howell and his team routinely escort the leadership of RC(S) to various locations within the region for meetings with Afghan leaders, securing the routes they travel on and the locations of the meetings. During these missions, the team has frequent interactions with Afghan military, police and civilians, particularly children.
