  • Dugan receives KC scholarship

    Kaskaskia College has announced that Micah Dugan of Vandalia has been named the recipient of the Jan and Jack Johnston Scholarship awarded through the Kaskaskia College Foundation.

    Dugan is a 2011 graduate of Vandalia High School and is a sophomore at KC majoring in nursing. She is the daughter of Duane and Tonna Dugan. Dugan, center, is shown with Jan and Jack Johnston.

    Monday's Evergreen Outreach meeting started with a smile, as Phyllis Rames was our leader. It was smooth as silk and warm as toast, in spite of the blustery cold weather.
    Three quarters of the Fourgiven Quartet made their way to Wesley Hall to share their faith and Southern gospel music with us. They were DeWayne Brown, lead singer, Bob Culbertson, tenor singer, and Jeff Hempkin, baritone singer and piano player.    Refreshments were provided by EO and volunteers.

    Mother of Dolors meal is this Sunday

    The annual St. Patrick's Day corned beef and cabbage dinner will be held this Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Mother of Dolors Catholic Church Parish Center, 705 W. St. Clair St.
    The menu will include corned beef and cabbage, ham, hot dogs, side dishes, desserts and drinks. The cost is $8 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 and up and free for children ages 5 and under. Carryouts are available by calling 283-8738.

    I once was selected by the Army to attend a training course at Fort Bragg, N.C. Prior to reporting to duty, the training center sent a “packing list” of all required field items that were to be in my possession to attend the course.

  • Family Video promotion aids lymphoma research

    Family Video, the nation’s largest movie and game rental chain, is taking a leading role in the fight against lymphoma. For the second consecutive year, Family Video customers are invited to "Round It Up for Lymphoma" between March 15-31.
    The Family Video in Vandalia is participating in the promotion.

  • Local Sears has new owner

    The Sears store, which has been located in Vandalia Commons for the past five years, is under new ownership.
    Randy Ruholl, who opened the store in late 2007, has sold it to Bill and Debbie Smith of Centralia, effective March 3. No strangers to the Sears operation, the Smiths have owned the Sears store in Centralia for the past eight years.

    Taylor re-elected chief of VVFD
    Ed Taylor Jr. was re-elected chief of the Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department at the department's annual meeting last month.

  • Volunteer Workers

    The Central Illinois Food Bank provided food for 239 families, with the total number of individuals served by the distribution being 686.

    The total included 243 children under the age of 18 and 141 seniors.

  • Ripperger to speak at final Lenten Luncheon

    The sixth and last Lenten Luncheon of this season will be hosted by Mother of Dolors Catholic Church on Wednesday, March 27, with the noon meal and program held in the Parish Hall building just across the street.
