    Brylie Mae Schmid
    Chris Schmid and Sarah Lilly of St. Elmo are the parents of a girl born at 8:40 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
    Brylie Mae weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces, and was 21 inches long.
    Grandparents are Andrew and Pamela Lilly of Beecher City, and Mark and Tracy Schmid of Auburn.

  • Volunteer weather recorders sought

    Fayette County Extension
    A volunteer weather program is looking for weather observers to measure precipitation in Vandalia, St. Elmo, Brownstown and other communities throughout Central and Southeastern Illinois, and a training session for the volunteers is set for Monday.
    Participation requires only a few minutes each day and provides a valuable service to the community. Training is provided and no prior experience is necessary.

    Eric Summers
    Army Pfc. Eric C. Summers has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga.
    During the nine weeks of training, the soldier received training in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions.
    Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.

    Kendra Rochelle Uphold of Kinmundy and Wade Lee Crain of Farina have announced their engagement and upcoming marriage.

  • Lester receives teaching award

    Jenny Lester, third-grade teacher at Vandalia Elementary School, was recently honored with a Region 5 Illinois Education Association (IEA) Outstanding Teacher Award.

  • Lake Land CC releases info about graduation

    Graduation may seem far off, but it’s right around the corner at Lake Land College.
    Important information for students and parents about graduation and preparing for graduation is as follows:
    March
    • Measurements for caps and gowns will be held through March 30 in the Lake Land College Bookstore. The bookstore is open daily from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
    • Students may now purchase graduation announcements in the Lake Land College Bookstore.

  • Kaskaskia College

    Lasagna gardening class
    The Kaskaskia College Office of Continuing/Community Education will offer a lasagna gardening class at the Vandalia Campus from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 23.
    The registration number is COED 5435 VA01W.
    Lasagna gardening is a no-dig, no-till organic gardening method that results in rich, fluffy soil with very little work from the gardener.

  • Dugan receives KC scholarship

    Kaskaskia College has announced that Micah Dugan of Vandalia has been named the recipient of the Jan and Jack Johnston Scholarship awarded through the Kaskaskia College Foundation.

    Dugan is a 2011 graduate of Vandalia High School and is a sophomore at KC majoring in nursing. She is the daughter of Duane and Tonna Dugan. Dugan, center, is shown with Jan and Jack Johnston.

  • Evergreen Outreach

    Monday's Evergreen Outreach meeting started with a smile, as Phyllis Rames was our leader. It was smooth as silk and warm as toast, in spite of the blustery cold weather.
    Three quarters of the Fourgiven Quartet made their way to Wesley Hall to share their faith and Southern gospel music with us. They were DeWayne Brown, lead singer, Bob Culbertson, tenor singer, and Jeff Hempkin, baritone singer and piano player.    Refreshments were provided by EO and volunteers.
