  • Vandalia Police

    Tuesday, Dec. 12
    • An officer responded at 1:10 a.m. to a burglar alarm at Wendy’s Restaurant on Veterans Avenue. An officer found an opened door and checked the building prior to the arrival of a keyholder.
    • During a parole check, Jessica R. Thomas, 23, of Vandalia, was arrested at 8:24 a.m. on charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
    • An officer took a report at 8:36 a.m. of a burglary at Jefferson Primary School.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Virginia A. Koontz, 28, 1910 W. Randolph St., Vandalia, was arrested on Dec. 26 for an alleged probation violation. Bond was $10,000.
    • Melvin L. Hartfield, 45, Wichita, Kan., was arrested on Dec. 26 on charges of possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. No bond information was listed.
    • Anthony L. Pharrow, 58, Cypress Gardens, Fla., was arrested on Dec. 25 for failure to appear in court. Bond was $2,500.

    Jimmy Feezel seems to have been born with the spirit of giving, the true spirit of Christmas, not seasonal, but all year long.

  • Council approves three TIF pacts

    The Vandalia City Council on Tuesday approved Tax Increment Financing assistance for three local projects.
    The council voted to give Tina Kingery up to $6,029.50, half of the estimated cost for improvements to her business, Country Folk, at 110 S. Third St.
    It also approved TIF assistance to two parties for improvements to the property at 1051 W. Veterans Ave.

  • No city tax hike

    Given two options for a new tax levy, the Vandalia City Council on Monday went with a third, one coming from aldermen.
    The council was asked to OK a levy with an increase of 6.87 percent or one with a considerably larger increase, 18.26 percent. In the end, they voted for a levy with no increase.
    As is custom, Dale Timmermann presented information on the city’s new levy during a public hearing prior to Monday’s city council meeting.

  • The End of an Era

    Marlys Hayner was there at the beginning and she was there at the end. For the duration of that 35-year period, Hayner helped to coordinate the program that has provided Christmas baskets for needy families in Fayette County.
