  • Ehrat to continue tennis career at Millikin University

    A 2013 Vandalia High School graduate will be continuing her athletic career as an NCAA Division III tennis player at Millikin University.

    Paige Ehrat will join the Big Blue tennis team after two strong years of play with the Lady Vandals varsity squad.

    “I am excited at the opportunity to coach Paige,” said Millikin tennis coach Dustin Forman. “While recruiting Paige, many things impressed me, including her passion for tennis, the desire to work hard and improve, and her enthusiasm for Millikin.

  • Lady Vandals sweep DH against alumni

    VANDALIA – The Lady Vandals got their first win of the summer on Tuesday, sweeping a doubleheader against the alumni.

    Rising senior Megan Godoyo tossed a shutout in an 8-0 win in game one, and Kelsey Swain scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth inning to secure a 6-5 win in game two.

    A team of different alumni players had swept the Lady Vandals in a doubleheader one week prior.

  • First summer shootout in the books

    VANDALIA – Final results of the first Vandal summer shootout were not available by press time, but results for a handful of games featuring local teams follow.

    On Tuesday afternoon, the Vandals lost in the first round of the tournament to Putnam County, 18-13.

    In a game that was close throughout the first half, Putnam County used a 6-0 run to take a lead it would not relinquish just before the halfway mark.

    Five Vandals scored in the game, with rising junior Luke Hollinshead leading the team with four points.

    It’s time. In fact, it’s well past time.
    Illinois legislators must deal with the state’s pension crisis.
    They had an opportunity during the recent legislative session, but left Springfield without any meaningful progress.

  • Rich, black soil draws farmers to area

    While leafing through a back issue of the genealogy quarterly of the Montgomery County Genealogical Society, headquartered in Litchfield, a series of letters written by Jacob Cress and Daniel Ludwick in the 1830s caught my attention.
    Addressed to family members still living in  Cabarrus County, N.C., the men, who were brothers-in-law, wrote letters encouraging their family to leave the “old wourn out red fields” of North Carolina and come to Illinois, were the land “is as rich and black as you wold want it.”

    1993 – A children’s activity area was added to the schedule for the Grande Levée. The area was sponsored by Baroque Folk, and was staffed by members of Vandalia Girl Scout Troop No. 381.
    Tonya Cox was valedictorian of the class of 1993 at Vandalia Community High School, and Arpad Walker was salutatorian.
    Tiffany Slater was valedictorian of the graduating class at Patoka High School, and Jennifer Britt was salutatorian.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Alberto V. Vela Jr., 36, 1028 W. St. Louis Ave., Vandalia, turned himself in on June 11 for failure to appear in court on a charge of deceptive practices. Bond was $2,500.
    • Robert M. Tater, 53, San Diego, Calif., was arrested on June 10 for failure to appear in court in Putnam County on a charge of driving while disqualified. Bond was $1,000.
    • Christine E. Carter, 24, 1429 W. Main St., Vandalia, was arrested on June 10 on a Bond County warrant for a charge of deceptive practices. Bond was $5,000.

  • Second shootout begins on Thursday

    Starting on Thursday, three area teams will be in action at the second Vandal Shootout of the summer.

    Vandalia, St. Elmo/Brownstown and Patoka will all be playing at the various gyms in the Vandalia district on Thursday and Friday, and Vandalia’s JV team will join the  action on Friday.

    Schedules for each of the local teams follow.
