  • Lady Aces fall in regional title game

    ST. ELMO – Mulberry Grove was outlasted by Altamont in a 12-inning regional championship game last Friday, losing 4-3 on a bloop single in the bottom of the 12th inning.

    Deidre Ledbetter’s flare to left was the third straight single of the 12th, and easily brought in the winning run at the St. Elmo Regional, ending a hard-fought game that saw both teams bring a tremendous amount of effort.

    Dave and Sue Denning are long-time health care professionals. Dave is the program director of therapy services at Vandalia Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, and Sue had served as a director of nursing for 25 years. A registered nurse, she is also employed at the Vandalia facility.

  • Isaak, Hill take part at IHSA state meet

    CHARLESTON – Two small-school athletes from the area last Thursday participated in the state track preliminaries.

    Patoka freshman Taylor Isaak took fifth in her heat of the 300-meter hurdles in her first state appearance, and St. Elmo junior Molly Hill came a couple of feet from throwing the discus 100 feet in her third state appearance.

    Isaak found herself racing against some of the best 300-meter hurdlers in the state, with three of the top-five finishers in heat two, and her time of 48.95 seconds was the 17th best in the state.

  • South Central freshman makes state in 200

    One small-school athlete from the area has qualified for the Illinois High School Association Class A state track meet.

    Chase Riley, a freshman at South Central High School who runs for the Patoka/South Central co-op track team, placed second in the 200-meter dash at the Lawrenceville Sectional to qualify for state.

    His time of 24.05 seconds allows him to be the only freshman qualifier in the 200.

    Preliminaries in the 200-meter dash will be held on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston on Thursday at about 2:15 p.m.

    Vandalia senior Brittany Anspach last Wednesday signed a letter of intent to join the bowling team at McKendree University.

  • Legion seasons begin Tuesday

    Vandalia’s Legion baseball teams will both open the summer season next Tuesday.

    The Jr. Legion and the Sr. Legion teams will be in action throughout July, with the Jr. Legion team hosting eight games, and the Sr. Legion team hosting 10 games at Vandalia Mutual Field.

    The teams are made up of players from several schools in the area.

    Schedules for each team follow, with all games not in a tournament being a doubleheader unless otherwise noted.
