    20 Years Ago

    1997 – The Vandalia Board of Education voted to have the Mt. Vernon architectural firm of Wilson, Hodge & Groh conduct a study regarding the district’s shortage of space.
    Mothers Against Drunk Driving of Fayette County held a candlelight vigil at First Baptist Church in Vandalia in memory of those killed or injured in accidents caused by drunk drivers.
    Howard and Lucille Wells celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

  • A murder that was never solved

    The case began with a telephone call to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office in early December 1962.
    Lyle McDonald, the newly elected sheriff, took the call and was asked whether a loss claim for a wallet found in a schoolyard near Herrick had been made. The wallet contained $500 and belonged to a man named Tony O’Dell.
    The caller said he did not want to get involved, but the sheriff should check some schoolhouse wells in the Herrick area for a body.

    That's Glen "Whitey" Daniels, a member of the Fayette County Board, talking as the board discussed a deficit budget last Thursday evening.
    Indeed, the county board has been fighting financial issues for a number of years, some of which have been created by the state's failure to provide its payments to the county on a timely basis.

  • Pana, St. Anthony in VHT title game; Vandals play for 5th

    The championship game of the 45th annual Vandalia Holiday Tournament will feature a rematch between Pana and Effingham St. Anthony.

    The two teams met earlier in the tournament, with St. Anthony recording a 50-48 win.

    The Vandals will play Shelbyville in the third-place game, set for 5 p.m.

    Patoka faces Flora in the third-place game at 6:30 p.m., and Ramsey faces Father McGivney in the seventh-place game at 3:30.

    Hospitalized
    Helen Limes of St. Peter, mother of Belinda Harpster, was taken to St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital by ambulance on Wednesday, Dec. 21, where she remains a patient. Upon her release, she will be going to Lutheran Care Center in Altamont.

  • Vandals' comeback against Comets falls short

    One night after fighting off a comeback attempt, the Vandals staged their own against Greenville last Thursday. And, like their opponents on Wednesday, the Vandals came up one point short.
