  • Fayette County Circuit Court

    • Jessi D. Schmidt, 22, of Vandalia, was sentenced to five years in prison last Wednesday upon pleading guilty to a charge of criminal sexual assault.
    Schmidt, who was given credit for 371 days he has served in jail, will be required to serve at least 85 percent of his remaining sentence.
    Schmidt, who was sentenced by Fayette County Resident Circuit Judge Don Sheafor, was charged in January of last year with two counts of criminal sexual assault with the use of force, all Class 1 felonies, and unlawful restraint, a Class 4 felony.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Caleb W. Warner, 21, 1003 W. St. Louis Ave., Vandalia, was arrested on March 21 on a charge of driving while his license is suspended or revoked. Bond was $1,500.
    • Michael W. Smith, 57, 418 W. Monroe, Farina, was arrested on March 21 for failure to appear in court. Bond was $2,500.
    • Michelle L. Olsen, 39, 316 W. Fourth St., St. Elmo, was arrested on March 21 for failure to appear in court. Bond was $3,000.
    • Jenelle D. Waldriff, 24, 304 W. Locust St., Fillmore, was arrested on March 21 for failure to appear in court. Bond was $1,500.

  • Other action at Monday's city council meeting

    At its meeting on Monday night, the Vandalia City Council:
    • Observed a moment of silence for Virginia “Ginny” Mabry, who had owned and operated several businesses in Vandalia with her husband, the late John Mabry.
    • Granted a request from Public Works Director Marlin Filer to seek bids for sidewalk installation in the section of the 500 block of West Gallatin Street where two building were demolished last fall.

    SON-Rise services at Northside

    Northside Christian Church, located at 1645 W. Jackson St., Vandalia, will hold a SON-Rise Service at 6:30 a.m. on Easter, Sunday, March 27.
    Immediately after the service, the church men will be serving breakfast until 8 a.m.
    A regular church service, the only one that day, will be at 9 a.m.

    MG church egg hunt is Saturday

    First Church of Christ in Mulberry Grove will hold its second annual Easter egg hunt at 10 a.m. on Saturday on the church property.

    My Lenten message is called, “What will you do for God?” It is based on the parable Jesus told of the two sons who were asked to go in the vineyard; one obeyed the father, and the other did not.
