  • Eagles edge South Central on Tuesday

    Lewis Brown and Nate Philpot combined for 40 points as St. Elmo/Brownstown edged county rival South Central, 59-58, on Tuesday.
    Philpot scored 11 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter, where the Eagles held a 19-17 edge and gain the win. Brown led all scorers with 23 points.
    St. Elmo/Brownstown led 14-9 after one quarter and held a 29-24 edge at halftime. South Central outscored the Eagles in the third quarter, 17-11, to go up by one heading into the final quarter.
    Trent Geiler led South Central with 15 points, and Logan Lotz had 13.

  • Eagles win MG tourney; Brown named MVP

    Isaac Maxey scored 19 points in the first half and three teammates joined him in double figures in the second half as Brownstown/St. Elmo defeated the host team in the championship game of the Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament.

    Thanksgiving Day Guests
    Thanksgiving Day guests of Dane and Belinda Harpster were: Nathan, Mahala and Harper Jacquin of St. Peter; Mitch, Gretchen, Owen, Aaron and Henry Harpster of Jackson, Mo.; and Mike and Renee Haarmann of Edgewood.
    Later in the evening, Dane and Belinda went to the home of Larry and Sue Urban to meet Halle Adams, the fiancée of Matt Urban. When they returned home, Belinda’s brother, Tony Limes of Dyersburg, Tenn., was there for a visit.

  • Brownstown bank starts Santa's Helpers

    The First National Bank of Brownstown is asking local residents to help them provide Christmas gifts for local needy children.
    Local residents may sponsor children up through high-school age by taking a tag from the bank’s Santa’s Secret Helpers Christmas Tree and purchasing the gift or gifts on the tag.
    Each tag provides the age and gender of the child, clothing sizes and desired gift or gifts.
    Then, residents return the tag with the gift or gifts to the bank no later than noon on Saturday, Dec. 16.

  • Wrestlers lose opener to Belleville West

    In a delayed start to their season, Vandalia wrestlers opened their 2017-18 campaign with a 48-30 loss to Belleville West on the road.
    In the season opener, Tanner Swain, Garret Stewart, Gavin Mouser and Anthony Enlow won by pins, and Jarrett Paslay won by forfeit.
    106 pounds – Josh Koderhandt of Belleville West won by pin over Morgan Dothager, 3:44.
    112 pounds – Parker McCullough (BW) defeated Jarek Wehrle (V), 7-0.
    120 pounds – Sam Segerstrom (BW) won by win over Dakota Gasaway (V), 3:47.
