     Power went out in the town of Vandalia and surrounding area at approximately 10:15-10:20 last night
    ·        Power at the prison was lost at approx. 10:20 and restored at 11:52 p.m.

    When we step outside the door at night, we are treated to a chorus of night sounds presented by the various night critters (frogs, insects, etc., and  sometimes, if Katie, the dog, sees a rabbit, cat or coyote in the yard we also hear frenzied barking.

    The Vandalia Community High School class of 1984 held its class reunion on Aug. 2 at the home of Charlie Pryor, north of Frogtown.
    Family Cookout
    Mr. and Mrs. Dan Yagow and Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Graumenz of St. Peter attended a family cookout at the Vernon Spilker home in Altamont on Sunday evening. Mr. Spilker is the nephew of Mrs. Graumenz and is retiring from teaching at Immanuel Lutheran School in Altamont.

    25 Years Ago

    1989 – Bill Donaldson resigned as Mulberry Grove Junior-Senior High School principal to become assistant regional superintendent for Bond, Fayette and Effingham counties. Dennis West was named as his replacement. Vandalia’s assistant superintendent, Dan Meyer, left that post to take over as superintendent of the St. Elmo School District.
    Jim Lewis was named Vandalia Community High School athletic director.
    Four Mile Church dedicated a new wing of its church. The new wing included an education/nursery room and kitchen.

  • Albrecht family settled in St. Paul area

    This past Sunday was a very special day at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wilberton Township. This year, 2014, represents the 150th year since the founding of the church by emigrants from Dodge County, Wis.

  • Motorists beware around schools

    The big yellow buses are back on our streets and roads again, and pedestrian traffic has stepped up significantly in areas around our schools.
    Those signs can mean only one thing – school is in session again.
    For our children, it’s the renewing of school routines, with all the activities and challenges that come with a new school year.
