    Ice cream social in Brownstown

    Brownstown First Christian Church will host an ice cream social this Sunday at 6 p.m. Members should bring their favorite topping or homemade ice cream.
    The church is located at the corner of First and Poplar streets.

  • Weather conditions move crops toward maturity

    Scattered showers continued throughout the state for the week ending Aug. 17. The Southeast part of the state received nearly 2 inches of precipitation,  while the Northwest received one tenth of an inch.
    There were 5.3 days suitable for fieldwork, which allowed farmers time to cut hay.
    Statewide, precipitation averaged 1.04 inches, 0.15 inches above normal.
    The average temperature was 69.4 degrees, 4.4 degrees below normal.

  • Area soil moisture levels rise with weekend rains

    Soil moisture levels in southern Illinois increased over the weekend as the region saw more than 3 inches of rain at some locations, according to Jennie Atkins, Water and Atmospheric Resources Monitoring (WARM) program manager at the Illinois State Water Survey, Prairie Research Institute, University of Illinois.

  • Food Bank Visits St. Elmo

    The Central Illinois Food Bank was in the parking lot of Pinnacle Foods in St. Elmo on Saturday.

    Mr. and Mrs. Curtis (Lotz) Jenne of St. Peter will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary with an open house from 2-4 p.m. this Sunday at St. Peter Village Hall.

  • Maske Sworn in as Ensign

    Daniel Maske, a fourth year student at Concordia Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis, is shown in the first photo being sworn in as an ensign in the Chaplain Corps of the Navy by his father, the Rev. Steven Maske, a retired Navy lieutenant and pastor of Good Shepard Lutheran Church in Elgin.

    Bill and Ann (Houston) Veal of rural Vernon celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

    They were married on Aug. 16, 1964, at the First United Methodist Church in Patoka.
    They are the parents of a daughter, Andrea (Mark) Britt of St. Peters, Mo., and a son Brent Veal, deceased. They have two granddaughters, Kathryn "Kate" and Lauren Britt.

    Verlin and Marcia Haslett celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on July 3 at their home in Fleming Island, Fla.

    Mark and Leanne Rinehart of Vandalia are the parents of twin boys born on Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at St. Mary’s Health Center in St. Louis, Mo.
    Brody Ryan, born at 6:44 p.m., weighed 4 pounds, 13 ounces and was 17.7 inches long, and Nolan Richard, born at 6:45 p.m., weighed 4 pounds 3 ounces, and was 17.3 inches long.
    They have a sister, Caroline, age 2.
