  • Theft, vandalism at cemeteries is disgusting

    Many of us like to remember and honor our deceased loved ones by placing flowers and momentos at their gravesite. It's a way of keeping those loved ones in our thoughts long after they have left us.
    But some individuals will sink as low as stealing from those gravesites.
    A resident approached the Vandalia City Council to see if there is anything the city can do to address cemetery thefts. That resident has had four cemetery saddles, flowers and vases stolen from a family member's gravesite.
    Thefts from gravesites is just downright unconscionable.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Megan E. Duckworth, 27, Collinsville, was arrested on June 6 on charges of driving without a license, no front license plate, expired registration sticker, no signal lamp, operation of an uninsured motor vehicle and possession of a hypodermic needle. Bond was $1,500.
    • Charles E. Horn Sr., 50, Donnellson, was arrested on June 5 for contempt of court. Bond was $75 cash.
    • Joseph M. McConkey, 43, 1990 E. 1600 Ave., St. Elmo, was arrested on June 5 for an alleged violation of bail bond. Bond was $25,000.

    VBS at Parkview Free Methodist Church

    Parkview Free Methodist Church, located at 1507 W. Jefferson St. in Vandalia, will hold Vacation Bible School this Saturday.
    Registration for “Once in a Minion” begins at 9:30 a.m., and VBS ends at 2 p.m., with lunch being provided. The VBS is open to all children preschool age through age 10.

    Residents of Brookstone Estates in Vandalia have long enjoyed the grassy, enclosed courtyard in the center of the circular arrangement of living quarters, like a sheltered atrium, but easily accessible to all residents and in full view of the Brookstone staff.

    Having been involved in several Workcamps Home Repair missions, Staci Carroll saw how the program allows youth to help individuals in need while also beautifying communities.
    Therefore, Carroll wanted to see about bringing the program to Vandalia. Her timing couldn’t have been better.
    “It was a God thing,” Carroll said about approaching Vandalia Mayor Rick Gottman last year.

  • Recycling vote coming in two weeks

    The Vandalia City Council could be voting on a water bill surcharge for recycling in two weeks.
    Mayor Rick Gottman said at Monday’s city council meeting that results from a survey on the proposed monthly surcharge of $1.25 that ended on Sunday evening “have been collected.
    “We will have a full report at the next (council) meeting (on Monday, June 19) to be acted on.”
