  • Vandals had memorable football season

    Call it a season to remember.
    After a disappointing 2013, the Vandalia Community High School football team bounced back nicely in 2014.
    The Vandals advanced to the playoffs, earning several memorable victories along the way. The team finished the season with a record of 5-5.
    "We rebounded this season," Vandalia Coach John Stout said. "We had a bad season last year (1-8). But the seniors rededicated themselves. I can't say enough about our senior class and the commitment they made in the offseason."

  • Winter sports practices under way

    Winter sports practices have arrived around the area and throughout the state.
    Vandalia Community High School is once again fielding teams in boys basketball, girls basketball and wrestling.
    Here's a quick look at each team as the 2014-15 season arrives.
    Girls Basketball
    The VCHS girls basketball team was the first to begin practicing, as girls teams around the state started practices on Monday, Nov. 3.

  • Calderaro joins the Law Group

    LeFcvre, Oldfield, Myers, Apke &. Payne Law Group Ltd. has announced that Ariana E. Calderaro has joined the firm in the practice of law.
    On Nov. 6, Calderaro was formally sworn in to the Illinois Bar.
    Calderaro was born in Pasadena, Calif., in 1986, and her family moved to Hannibal, Mo., in 1996.

  • FS Promotion Helps Varsity Club

    Representatives of South Central FS recently presented to the Vandalia Community High School Varsity Club a donation of $1,110, which was raised through a special promotion in September.

    During that month, FS donated one cent from every gallon of unleaded fuel sold at its Travel Center and Fast Stop. The promotion ties in with the FS slogan of "Supporting Our Community."     First National Bank announces that Tyler Osborne has been hired as the assistant financial officer, starting at his new position on Oct. 13, 2014.

    I hardly know where to start – our Veterans Day speakers were so inspirational!
    But let me do some housekeeping first. Pastor James Fackler was our leader and Donna Smith our pianist. We sang our regular welcome and Outreach songs, and need to give special thanks to Donna for not complaining about our out-of-tune voices. We sang “Happy Birthday” to Tonya Stout and Hope Holffstatler. We welcomed a newcomer, Beulah Nichols, and were saddened to hear about Marvin Stall of FAYCO becoming ill.

  • Operation Christmas Child drop-off begins on Monday

    First United Methodist Church in Vandalia is again hosting Operation Christmas Child for this year, with collections being accepted beginning on Monday.
    The church, located at 127 N. Fouth St., is the Vandalia Relay Center for Operation Christmas Child, through which shoe boxes from both Fayette and Montgomery counties are accepted.
    Operation Christmas Child is a worldwide children’s project of Samaritan’s Purse that used gift-filled shoe boxes to let hurting boys and girls know that they are loved and not forgotten.
