    Ministry for mothers, children to start

    A new ministry for mothers with babies and young children will began on Tuesday at Parkview Free Methodist Church.
    Called "22:6 Playgroup," the faith-based group will meet from 6-8 p.m. Its name is derived from Proverbs 22:6, which says: "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it."

  • Liberty Christian hosts Steve Ladd

    Steve Ladd, a well-known, award-winning recording gospel singer, traveled from Tennesee to hold a concert at the Liberty Christian Church in rural Brownstown on Sunday evening, Aug. 24.
    Ladd sang and spoke to an appreciative audience of all ages. His 11-year-old son, Hayyden, accompanied him and operated the sound. Hayden also sings with his father sometimes.
    The Rev. Jim Dann, pastor of Liberty Christian Church, welcomed those present, many of whom traveled from other towns for the concert.

    With Gottman is John Dotray, the current president of the Vandalia Lions Club. This Friday, Lions members will be accepting donations that will be used to support the Lions' sight and hearing programs.

    There were four days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending Aug. 31.
    Statewide, precipitation averaged 1.08 inches.
    The average temperature was 77.6 degrees, 4.2 degrees above normal.
    Corn in the dough stage reached 97 percent, compared to the five-year average of 93 percent. Corn dented reached 72 percent, compared to 44 percent last year.
    Corn mature reached 5 percent, compared to the five-year average of 24 percent.
    Corn condition was rated at 82 percent good to excellent.

  • Survey: good numbers, wide range of yields

    If the 24 men who canvassed fields throughout Fayette County last week were on target, and they traditionally are, county farmers can expect pretty good corn and soybean yields this fall.
