    • Steven C. Shaffer, 29, 2079 N. 2115, St. Elmo, was arrested on March 2 on a charge of possession of a controlled substance. He was being held awaiting the setting of bond.
    • Alan D. Meyers, 34, 812 N. Main St., St. Elmo, was arrested on March 2 for failure to appear in court on a felony charge. Bond was $5,000.
    • Alberto V. Vela Jr., 38, 131 S. Shelby Ave., Vandalia, was arrested on March 2 for failure to appear in court on a domestic charge. Bond was $2,500.

    Approximately 74 senior citizens are participating in a relative new activity in the area and word is beginning to get out about it.

  • Two charged Tuesday with theft of area trailers

    A routine traffic stop on Tuesday led to the arrest of two individuals on charges related to recent trailer thefts in the Fayette County area.
    The office of Fayette County State’s Attorney Joshua Morrison filed three charges against Johnny L. Baker, 18, 808 N. 800th St., Shobonier, and also charged theft charges against a local 17-year-old juvenile.

  • A big hit for the city?

    A proposal by new Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner could have officials in Vandalia really sharpening their pencils as they draw up a new budget.
    Rauner recently announced that he would like to, as part of dealing with the state’s financial woes, cut in half the amount of income tax that the state gives to municipalities.
    On Monday night, Mayor Rick Gottman said that if Rauner’s proposal becomes reality, that would reduce the amount of the city’s income taxes from the state from $695,964 to $347,922 this year.

    While looking through back issues of The Vandalia Union, I came across an article that rather surprised me. The subject of the article was the demolition of Washington School, which was scheduled to begin April 23, 1940.
