  • Burnside scholarship established

    The Old Capitol Foundation is now accepting applications for the John and Sherry Baumann Burnside Scholarship, which is open to Fayette County residents enrolled in an accredited college, university or technical school.
    The Burnsides, graduates of Vandalia High School, were impacted by their Midwestern upbringing and hard work ethic.
    The new John and Sherry Baumann Burnside Scholarship allows their legacy to be an investment in the youth of Fayette County.

    Mindy Miller, who was diagnosed with stage two triple negative breast cancer at the age of 34, “ was blessed to be surrounded by family and a community that supported me.”

    Two Vandalia residents were arrested on methamphetamine charges on Friday evening after two off-duty county deputies noticed a car in Griffith Cemetery in rural Brownstown as they drove by on Interstate 70.

  • Drug sweep nets 10 arrests

    Ten individuals were arrested on Tuesday as several area law enforcement agencies worked together on a drug enforcement sweep.
    The sweep – which involved the Southeastern Illinois Drug Task Force, Fayette County Sheriff’s Department, Illinois State Police, Vandalia Police Department, Illinois Attorney General Police and Fayette County State’s Attorney – was conducted on arrests warrants for new drug charges.
    Those arrested on Tuesday, and their charges, include:

    ✔ CenterPointe Church, located at 1616 Veterans Ave. in Vandalia, is holding free Weekly Fit Club sessions at 6 p.m. every Thursday.

    “Ice-Breaker” on the Homestead …
    … is the ax or sledgehammer; not conversational words at a social/party gathering to “break the ice,” but a healthy swing with said tools to break the ice in the  critters’ “watering holes” (translation-water tanks, buckets, pans, birdbaths).
    As we have several such items and some farther away from the house, it has not seemed feasible to try to run electric cords to the assorted containers.
