  • Following in Edsel's tracks

    A little more than 100 years ago, Henry Ford’s son stopped over in Vandalia as he and some of his friends were on one of this country’s earliest road trips. On Sunday, a crew stopped here as they re-create that trip.

  • City plan has many projects

    The Vandalia City Council approved on Monday a spending plan for the coming year that includes a number of capital improvement projects that have been postponed for several years.
    Not among those projects is the replacement of a bridge on Thrill Hill Road between U.S. Route 51 and Zent Drive.
    The appropriations ordinance for the new fiscal year has expenditures estimated at $9,154,165 and revenues at $9,037,639.
    The $116,526 deficit is due in large part to a deficit of $255,518 in the capital improvement fund.

  • Report on misconduct claim released

    The investigation that resulted in the former chairman of the Fayette County Board being cleared of official misconduct allegations included interviews of about 20 people.
    The investigation into County Clerk and Recorder Vicky Conder’s claim of being intimidated by Steve Knebel included interviews with most of the county board members and several county officers.
    Conder claimed that Knebel threatened to cut her office’s budget if she did not hire an individual he was recommending for a position in her office.

  • Reunion

    The 77th annual Elam family reunion will be held at noon on Aug. 2 at the Mulberry Grove Community Building.
    A potluck dinner will be held at noon. Those attending are asked to take a covered dish and their own table service.

    A card shower has been requested for Mary Naber of Vandalia, who celebrated her 93rd birthday on July 20.

    Crown Point VBS is next week

    Crown Point Church will host Vacation Bible School from Monday through Friday next week, from 6-8 p.m. each day.
    The theme is “Bible Blast to the Past – Discover God’s Everlasting Love!”
    All children ages 3-12 are invited to participate in the program, which includes Bible lesions, music, crafts and refreshments.
    The public is invited to a family night program on Saturday at 6 p.m. It will include a picnic-style meal.

    Sharon Burnette and Bud Seigel, both of Vandalia, have announced their engagement and upcoming marriage.

    The future bride is the mother of Thomas J. Bivens Jr. of Centralia, Nicole Bivens of Salem and Bobbie Ball of Centralia.
    The future groom is the father of Ashley Seigel of Vandalia.
    The couple are planning a private wedding on Aug. 1 at their home, followed by a reception with family and friends at 5 p.m. at the Mad Dog Clubhouse in Vera.
