    Attend Birthday Party
    Dane and Belinda Harpster of St. Peter, traveled to Cape Girardeau, Mo., to attend the seventh birthday party of grandson Dru Eller on Saturday.
    They spent the weekend at the home of Mitch, Gretchen, Owen and Aaron Harpster of Cape Girardeau.
    Mahala Jacquin of Villa Ridge, Mo., also joined them.

    Keri, Elijah, and Emma Latin of Chase, Mich., spent the weekend with her parents, Larry and Sue Urban of St. Peter.

    Critters Tolerating Heat Well
    The last few days have been hot and steamy, but all of the critters seem to be doing fine. The outside ones (Katie, the doggie and Betsy and her Long Horn family) don’t seem to be acting any different. They are hitting the waterin’ hole (tank) fairly often, but we keep the water flowing in the tank regularly, so, no problem.
    The Longhorns still have the energy to run and stampede across the pasture to the fence to watch the garbage truck on the Friday morning pickups every month.

  • Jerauld wrote of life here in the 1850s

    In a letter dated April 9, 1914, Sarah McAfee Jerauld responded to a request by the editor of The Vandalia Union to write of her experiences for the anniversary issue of the newspaper.
    She wrote, “When I moved to Vandalia in March 1852, there was not a foot of brick pavement in town and only 10 brick houses.

    1989 – Vandalia Chamber of Commerce was seeking volunteer greeters for the tourism center.
    Between 250 and 300 honored Jim Staff at a retirement reception. Staff served in the field of education for 38 years and was superintendent of schools for Fayette County since 1959. Effingham and Bond counties were later added to his region.
    Jane Eaton won the 11th annual St. Andrews Ladies Open Golf Tournament.

  • Celebrate safely this weekend

    The Fourth of July is a celebration of our country’s independence that always includes gathering of friends and family, community festivals and, in general, a lot of summer fun.
    Unfortunately, many times it also includes injuries due to unsafe use of consumer fireworks.
    As area residents prepare for the three-day holiday weekend, the Office of the State Fire Marshal is urging everyone to leave the fireworks to the professionals trained to handle them.

  • ISP announces alternative option for CCL applications

    Illinois State Police officials announced on Monday that an alternative application option to apply for a Concealed Carry License is now available for those individuals without computer access.
    Applicants can contact the ISP Firearms Services Customer Service Center phone line at (217) 782-7980 and provide a FSB call taker with the same CCL application information that is currently required through the CCL online process.
