    25 Years Ago

    1989 – Jeanne Gustafson was named interim economic development director for the city of Vandalia.
    Dave Bell won the 10K run held in conjunction with the Grande Levée.

    30 Years Ago

    1984 – Jim Kelly and Anna Ruth Kains retired from the Fayette County Hospital Board of Directors. They were presented plaques by Chairman John Daniels. Marie Bristow of Vandalia and Elbert Finley Jr. of Ramsey replaced Kelly and Kains.

  • Hickman told about life in the 1860s

    In 1914, The Vandalia Union celebrated its 50th anniversary by inviting readers to write reminiscences for publication in an anniversary issue. Many people took the editor up on the invitation, including Cynthia Luster Hickman.

    Mrs. Hickman lived on the 400 block of North First Street, and her home stands today a beautiful representative of the Queen Anne style of architecture. Kyle Barker is the current owner.
    She remembered that after the gold rush, men did not carry pocket books; they carried sacks full of gold, William Lee and Jake Albert included.

  • Residents show support for pool

    A politician once said, “It takes a village to raise a child.” In Vandalia, it can be said, “It takes a community to save its pool.”
    And, that is what’s happening here, with local residents responding to the efforts of Manager Lisa Robbins and the Vandalia Swimming Pool staff to keep that facility afloat.
    In less than a year, the pool staff has raised just under $18,000 through various fundraisers and donations.

  • Post 95 set to tackle Firecracker Classic

    Vandalia will travel to its second tournament of the summer this week, the annual Mattoon Firecracker Classic.

    Post 95 will have at least four games in the 29th annual Sr. Legion event, and play began on Wednesday and continues through Saturday. Pool play will conclude on Friday.

  • Youth help get fairgrounds ready for '14 fair

    The Fayette Faces this week are those of the youth in the 4-H clubs and Girl Scouts. They were on the fairgrounds at this time, not to ride the carnival tides or enjoy the treats at the concession stands, but to work at cleaning up their fairgrounds for their county fair, with the supervision of their leaders and other adults interested in putting their best foot forward for the fair.

  • Vandals oust SEB at Vandal Shootout

    VANDALIA – For the third time this summer, Vandalia made the quarterfinals of the tournament in a Vandal Shootout.

    A late comeback try against Olney came five points short on Tuesday afternoon, as the Tigers squeaked out a 31-26 victory.

    Brownstown firefighters not soliciting

    The Brownstown Fire Department has learned about a scam in which callers say that they are representatives of the BFD and are soliciting donations.
    Anyone receiving phone calls seeking donations to the department should not agree to make donations.
    A representative of the department said that the BFD does not solicit  donations.
