  • School year starting soon

    As you can see by reading this issue, the start of a new school year is just around the corner, and everyone is helping students and their parents be prepared.
    In this issue, we include the times and dates for area school registrations, as well as information about the Back(Packs) 2 School and Tools for School programs. At the request of Vandalia School District officials, we are repeating detailed information about registration and school supply lists.

    Last week, while working on a research project that required searching back issues of The Vandalia Union, which are available on microfilm at Evans Public Library, I came across an article in the July 28, 1938, edition titled, “The Editor Cruises Around Town on A Dull Summer Day,” by Editor Ira Lakin.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Brittany K. Yokley, 25, 1014 W. St. Louis Ave., Vandalia, was arrested on July 27 on charges of criminal trespass to a residence and criminal trespass to property. Bond was $1,500.
    • Tyler J. Dunaway, 33. 220 S. Pine St., St. Elmo, was arrested on July 27 on charges of criminal trespass to property and criminal trespass to land. Bond was $1,500.

  • Boil order for all of Vandalia

    Marty Huskey, Vandalia's water plant superintendent announced this afternoon a boil order for all city water customers.
    The boil order is necessary as a result of the cleaning work being done on the water tower at the country club.
    The boil order is in effect until further notice.

  • Ray Radliff dies Thursday; services on Tuesday

    Lawrence Ray Radliff, 77, of Vandalia passed away at 9:31 a.m. on Thursday, July 23, 2015, at home.

    OK, here is the scoop. Evergreen Outreach had the best party in town. At Fayette County Hospital and Long Term Care, we ate, clapped hands, sang, danced and created very slightly mischievous good times. We are OK, as long as that angel peeking around the corner (Pastor James Fackler) keeps his eye on us.

  • School Registration

    ST. ELMO
    • Registration days for St. Elmo Jr.-Sr. High School and Elementary School are Aug. 6-7, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
    • Seventh-grade orientation for all seventh-grade students and parents in the Jr/Sr High cafeteria-Aug. 17, 6 p.m.
    All students, including those new to the district and district students who attend classes in Vandalia, should register Aug. 6 or 7. Junior-senior high students enrolled in physical education classes are required to wear P.E. Uniforms. Uniforms can be purchased at registration for $12.
