    A week after Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn chose not to sign a new contract with the union representing the majority of state workers, local members of that union were expressing their displeasure with the governor.

  • High-powered offense leads Bombers to title

    Senior Shane Sefton made a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the third period to tie the game at 52, and junior Jacob Behrends sealed the win with a 3-pointer late in the fourth quarter of Brownstown’s 70-65 win in Saturday’s championship game of the Mulberry Grove/Ramsey Super Turkey Tournament.
    The victory was the fourth straight game in which Brownstown had scored at least 70 points.

  • Vandals victorious in season-opener at South Central

    FARINA – A five-point possession in the middle of the third quarter was the turning point for Vandalia in a 46-26 victory at South central in last Tuesday’s season-opener.

    Senior Tim Ritchey made a 3-pointer but was fouled after the shot, and senior Michael Wells made a second-chance layup on the ensuing possession to give the Vandals a 30-14 lead and control of the game with 3:51 left in the third period.

  • City still talking with partners on water pact

    Vandalia officials are continuing to work on an agreement with a local partnership that is offering to the city a third water source.
    Mayor Rick Gottman, members of the city council’s water and sewer committee, and city Water Plant Superintendent Marty Huskey met again last Monday with Walt Barenfanger and Jeff Beckman.

  • Farina man guilty of sex crimes

    It took a Fayette County jury less than 30 minutes on Tuesday to convict a Farina man of sex offenses.
    Ryan E. Mulvaney, 35, was found guilty of four aggravated criminal sexual abuse at the completion of a two-day jury trial.
    The trial began with jury selection on Monday morning and ended early Tuesday afternoon with closing arguments by Fayette County Assistant State’s Attorney Matt Chancey and Mulvaney’s attorney, Bryan Kibler of Effingham.

  • Mahon to play for Baltimore Orioles

    St. Elmo native Logan Mahon is heading back to Major League Baseball.

    The Baltimore Orioles have purchased Mahon’s contract from the Gateway Grizzlies, according to the team.

    “We’re excited for Logan and happy that he will get another chance in affiliated ball,” Grizzlies manager Phil Warren said in a release.  “He’s deserving of the chance, and we wish him well.”

  • Eagles beat Cougars in NTC matchup

    ST. ELMO – The Eagles switched defenses to pull away from the Cougars in a National Trail Conference matchup on Tuesday.

    That defensive switch turned a 12-12 tie into a 22-14 halftime lead during a 45-31 St. Elmo victory.

    “We had to go sit in a zone – and I’m stubborn that way – but if we had stayed in man-to-man, we probably never would have pulled away,” said Eagles coach Greg Feezel. “If we have to go to a zone, we will.”

    The schedule for this season's St. Elmo Holiday Tournament has been announced, and the hosts have the No. 1 seed.
