  • Camilla Diveley celebrates 100th birthday

    Camilla Diveley celebrated her 100th birthday on Dec. 13.

    A lifetime resident of Vandalia, she was born to Mr. and Mrs. John (Julia) Diveley on a farm in Sefton Township.
    She had four sisters: Genevieve, now 98; Vodithe (Reavis, deceased); and twin sisters Beatrice (Davis), now 92, and Bernice (Scraper, deceased).
    Camilla grew up on the farm with her sisters, and she attended a one-room school that housed eight grades.  She graduated from Vandalia High School, where she was a member of an award-winning debate team.

    VCHS Wrestling
    The Vandals traveled to Whitfield, Mo. last Tuesday for a quad with Whitfield, Kirkwood and Festus. Vandalia turned in a strong performance topping Kirkwood and Festus before dropping a close one to Whitefield, 40-36.
    Individual Results
    106 pounds: Zack Stephenson defeated Dillon French by fall, 1:22; defeated Robbie Lovelace of Kirkwood by fall, 3:36.
    113: Tanner Swain defeated Mark Mackenzie of Kirkwood by fall, 3:36; defeated Wade Raeman of Whitfield by fall, 3:45.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Darrel D. Taylor, 43, Elyria, Ohio, was arrested on Dec. 27 on a charge of driving while his license is suspended or revoked. Bond was $1,500.
    • Karen S. Perkins, 56, 207 E. Third St., Ramsey, was arrested on Dec. 27 on charges of retail theft and disorderly conduct. Bond was $1,500.
    • Brett M. Erhardt, 23, Stillwell, Okla., was arrested on Dec. 27 on a charge of retail theft. Bond was $10,000.

  • South Central's first half struggles fuel 0-3 start

    The South Central Cougars struggled to start on the right foot in the Vandalia Holiday Tournament, dropping its first three games to Flora, Pana and Greenville.
    In game one Saturday afternoon, the Cougars faced the top-seeded Flora Wolves, who proved to be too much to handle, as they defeated South Central, 57-42.
