  • Judge denies request to suppress statements in murder case

    A judge has agreed to suppress a statement made by a Loogootee teen in an ambulance shortly after he allegedly murdered a couple living a short distance from him.
    But, Judge Michael McHenry denied a motion by Clifford Baker’s attorneys to suppress statements he made during a videotaped interview a few hours later.
    McHaney filed on Tuesday an eight-page docket entry that included his rulings on several motions argued during a hearing in Fayette County Circuit Court last Friday.

  • Judge denies suppression of teen's videotape statement

    A judge denied on Tuesday a motion to suppress statements made by a 16-year-old Loogootee teen several hours after he allegedly murdered a neighboring couple.

    Judge Michael McHaney filed in Fayette County Circuit Court on Tuesday an eight-page docket entry that included his rulings on motions made during a hearing in the Clifford Baker case last Friday.

    Baker is charged with murdering Mike Mahon and Deb Tish in their Loogootee home last August. He is being held in the Madison County Juvenile Detention Center on $2 million bond.

    The Vandalia Lions Club's Easter egg hunt will be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Ruemmelin Park on West Fillmore Street in Vandalia.

    Friday's softball game between Vandalia and Hillsboro at Hillsboro has been canceled.

    The home baseball game against Hillsboro for today is also canceled.

  • Johnson picks IC

    Vandalia senior Marty Johnson has decided to continue his academic and basketball careers at Illinois College.

    Johnson, a two-time team Most Valuable Player and a three-time all-conference player, scored more than 1,000 points in his career with the Vandals.

    He plans to study accounting at IC.

  • Senior Spotlight: Courtney Gordon

    As a senior, Courtney Gordon understands that taking on a leadership role is an unwritten rule of her membership with the Vandalia High School girls track team.

    Therefore, it’s a good thing, as she puts it, that, “I like being in charge.”

    And she has certainly taken charge to lead by example.

    Gordon has been a staple in four events this season, regularly placing in the long jump, 100-meter dash and 300-meter hurdles, while also running a leg on a successful 4X100-meter relay team.
