  • New merchants group to host rummage sale

    The Downtown Vandalia Merchants Co-op, the newly formed downtown merchants group, will sponsor a downtown rummage sale on Saturday, Sept. 11.

    Downtown stores will have items in the sale, and merchants are inviting local residents to sell items, as well.

  • Satterthwaites recall their youth in Shafter

    The Satterthwaite family bought the Shafter Store in 1945, and last week, Don, Harry, and John Satterthwaite shared some of their memories about the store.
    This week, the saga continues as they reminisce, and move on to the eventual demise of the store, but not of their memories.

  • Man awaiting trial on meth charge arrested again

    A rural Vandalia man who is scheduled to go to trial in October on a methamphetamine charge was arrested for meth possession again last weekend.
    Leonard E. Scholes, 44, was arrested on Sunday and charged on Monday with partcipation in a methamphetamine-manufacturing operation.
    The charge alleges the manufacture of up to 400 grams of methamphetamine.
    A Class X felony, the meth manufacture offense is punishable by up to 40 years in prison.
    Scholes was also charged with the possession of up to 400 grams of methamphetamine, also a Class X felony.

  • Cost-cutting helps FCH see a profit

    As a result of ongoing cost-cutting measures, Fayette County Hospital recorded another profitable month in July – the first month of the new fiscal year. With revenues of $153,937 and expenses of $117,717, the operation produced a profit of $36,220 for the month.
    “The reason we’re making a profit is that we’re controlling expenses,” said Greg Starnes, chief executive officer of the hospital. “We’re a much leaner operation than we were last year, and we’ll stay that way.”

  • Work on new FCHD home to begin soon

    Work on the former hardware store that will become the new home of the Fayette County Health Department could get under way as soon as next week.
    Rhonda Andrews, FCHD administrator, said on Wednesday that demolition work on the property in the 400 block of West Edwards Street that formerly housed Leo Brown Lumber is almost finished. That work, being done by Grubaugh Contracting, includes the demolition of three buildings.

  • Buddy Bass Tournament Winners

    The Vandalia Sport Fishing & Conservation Club held a buddy bass toiurnament on Satuday at Vandalia Lake. The winners, from left to right, were: first, Tom Lindley and Scott Wisnasky, 9.25 pounds; second, Mike Lindley and Steve Booth, 6.86 pounds; and third, Owen Karnes Jr. and John Blythe, 3.96 pounds.  Robert Lindley, right, was the big bass winner, with a catch of 3.01 pounds.

  • Tennis squad opens with win

    Vandalia’s tennis squad opened the season on Monday with a 5-4 win over Roxana.
    Natasha Opfer, Lauren Wasmuth and Callie George posted singles wins, and the doubles teams of Opfer-Wasmuth and Cassie Goodin-Micah Dugan won in doubles.

  • Fayette County Speedway Results

    Kelly’s Performance Diesel is sponsoring the Friday night events at Fayette County Speedway.
    For UMP DIRTcar Modifieds, $750 to win, $100 to start.
    Also racing are UMP DIRTcar-sanctioned street stocks and hornets, and team cars.
    There will also be another powder puff event.
    For hornets, there is a $100 bonus to the driver who beats Rob Shaw; Shaw must finish the race.
