    It’s always more fun to honor someone when they don’t expect it, and when they honestly don’t understand what all the fuss is all about. Then, you can be assured that they’re doing their good deeds for the right reasons.
    Such was the case with this year’s honorees for the Abe Awards, presented last Thursday by the Vandalia Chamber of Commerce.
    Receiving the prestigious awards for exemplary community service work were Joyce Mueller and Doug Kenebel.

    The Vandalia High School boys basketball game at Pana has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 7.

    The Vandalia High School girls basketball game at Greenville has been canceled and will not be made up. Instead the first-round regional tournament game will count in the conference standings. That game is on Saturday.

    St. Elmo boys basketball against Teutopolis has been canceled and rescheduled for a later date.

    Ramsey boys basketball against Altamont has been canceled.

    All Brownstown athletic events have been canceled.

  • Sports cancellations -- Monday, Jan. 31

    The following Vandalia sports have been canceled for Monday, Jan. 31.

    •Freshman boys basketball
    •Fifth- and sixth-grade girls basketball
    •Sixth-grade boys basketball

    The Brownstown High School girls basketball game at Cowden-Herrick has been canceled.

    The South Central High School girls basketball game against Noble has been canceled.

  • Area schools dismissing early

    Area schools are dismissing early this afternoon (Monday) due to weather:

    Vandalia-Jefferson Primary, 1:15 p.m.; Vandalia Elementary and Junior High School, 1:25 p.m.; and the high school, 1:30.

    Brownstown-Elementary, 1:15 p.m., and junior high-high school, 1:20 p.m.

    St. Elmo-2 p.m.

    Ramsey-1:30 p.m.
