    Local authorities are asking for the public’s help in locating the Vandalia man who failed to show up on Monday for his jury trial on child pornography charges, and are offering a reward for anyone who helps find him.

  • City to consider fee for recycling

    Vandalia’s aldermen will likely be asked to vote on a $1.25 surcharge on water bills to help fund the community’s two recycling programs.
    The city council’s cemetery and landfill committee, and Mayor Rick Gottman, on Monday asked FAYCO Enterprises and the Fayette County Soil and Water Conservation District to draft such agreements.

  • Defendant, attorney are no shows

    Ryan Koontz chose not to show up on Monday as his jury trial on child pornography charges got under way. On the second day of that scheduled trial, neither Koontz nor his attorney showed up.
    Now, a new trial will have to be scheduled for Koontz, a 36-year-old Vandalia man who was charged with 10 counts of child pornography in November 2014.

  • Well given special honor

    Vandalia’s superintendent of schools was among 25 school administrators in the state receiving a special honor on Monday.
    Rich Well, who has served as the Vandalia School District’s superintendent for the past 11 years, was one of 21 superintendents picked by their regional colleagues to receive Superintendent of Distinction honors in Springfield.

  • Dynamic Dental's Free Dental Day is May 5

    Dynamic Dental Group in Vandalia is again holding a Free Dental Day.
    The fourth annual event will be held from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, May 5, at the dental practice, located at 2102 W. Randolph St. in Vandalia.
    No appointments are being taken, and patients must be at least 18 years of age.
    Patients can choose one cleaning, extraction or filling.
    Patients will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. They are encouraged to arrive early and dress appropriately for the weather.

    The local observance of the National Week of Prayer gets under way on Sunday evening.

    • Monday, 7:30 a.m. – Vandalia Tourist Information Center, North Fifth and Fletcher streets.
    • Tuesday, 8 a.m. – Vandalia Community High School gym.
    • Wednesday, 7:30 a.m. – Fayette County Courthouse entrance.

    This Saturday, the Family YMCA of Fayette County is holding a free community event to inspire more kids to keep their minds and bodies active at the annual YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day, the Y’s national initiative to improve health and well-being for kids and families.
    The morning event features activities such as games, healthy living education, arts and crafts, and exercise on the inflatables to motivate and teach families how to develop healthy routines at home.
