  • Brownstown/St. Elmo co-op junior girls basketball results

    The Brownstown/St. Elmo co-op junior high girls basketball teams have started their seasons.

    The seventh-graders are 1-5 thus far, having defeated Sacred-Heart, 36-10, and lost to Ramsey (28-8), Greenville (30-16), Stew-Stras (43-21), Altamont (39-19) and Greenville (30-11).

  • Vandalia Jr. Pro basketball slated to start Oct. 30

    Vandalia High School athletic director and boys basketball coach Kevin Jackson has announced the dates for the Jr. Pro basketball program.

    Boys in grades K-6 are eligible to participate in the program, which will meet on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 9-10:30 a.m.; Tuesday, Nov. 2, from 6-7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Nov. 6, from 9-10:30 a.m.; and at the Red/White game on Nov. 13. Registration is $25 for an individual and $40 for two or more children from the same household. Forms can be picked up at the high school office.

  • Hosick Motors sponsoring fund raiser for Vandal athletics

    Hosick Motors will be hosting a tent event and tailgate by KFC/Taco Bell in Vandalia this Friday to raise money for Vandalia High School athletics.

    For each vehicle at the event that is test driven throughout the day prior to the football game, Vandalia athletics will receive $20.

  • Kinney hands out soccer awards

    Coach Walt Kinney handed out the following awards at the Vandalia High School soccer team banquet on Tuesday:

    Most Valuable Player – Lucas McDowell

    Hustle Award – Matt Hubbart

    Hustle Award – Steven Daley

    Iron Man Award – Brett Ambuehl

    Iron Woman Award – Chelsea Roberts

  • South Central names assistant basketball coach

    Louis Daugherty, a 2005 graduate of South Central High School, has been hired as an assistant high school basketball coach for the Cougars.

    Additionally, he will coach the JV and freshman/sophomore teams.

    Daugherty played basketball for the Cougars in high school and was named to the IBCA Honorable Mention All-State Team as a senior. He also played baseball for South Central.

  • Lifeguard given award in California

    J.K. Barnes, grandson of John and Dorothy Barnes of Patoka, and Jennie Alice and the late Joe Harner of Brownstown, received the Mountain Mike McKay Rookie of the Year Award from the city of Solana Beach, Calif., after finishing his first year as an ocean beach lifeguard. He also served as president of a lifeguard association this summer.

  • Favorable weather aids harvest progress

     Last week was yet another warm and dry period for all of the state. Harvest progression has slowed slightly, as much of what is left is in isolated pockets throughout the state.
    Most areas of the state are very close to being done with corn harvest, and are wrapping up the harvest of the late-planted soybeans as well.

  • Harvest winding down

    As of Oct. 1, the corn for grain yield in Illinois was expected to drop 14 bushels from the Sept. 1 forecast to 160 bushels per acre. Production would be 1.98 billion bushels, 3 percent less than last year’s crop.
    As of Oct. 3, 74 percent of the crop was harvested, which compares to 5 percent last year at this time and a five-year average of 31 percent. This year’s harvest progress is just 1 percentage point behind the record level of 75 percent in 1991, and advanced throughout the month of September right at that pace.

  • Buddy Bass Tournament (Sept. 25)

    The Vandalia Sport Fishing and Conservation Club held a Buddy Bass Tournament on Vandalia Lake on Saturday, Sept. 25. The winners are pictured; from left to right: Owen Karnes Jr. and Terry Bell, first place with 10.44 pounds; Lonnie Gerdes, second place with 10.01 pounds; and Carl Runkel and Shawn Runkel, third place with 9.35 pounds. The big bass winner was Karnes with a 2.97-pound catch.
