  • Lady Vandals stay perfect with win at Hillsboro

    HILLSBORO — Vandalia's volleyball team moved to 9-0 after beating Hillsboro, 25-17, 25-18, on Thursday night.

    Senior RaeChelle Leiken led the attack, with nine kills, and the Lady Vandals had a season-high six blocks, including one solo and two assists from Leiken, and three assists from each junior Megan Godoyo and senior Sierah Ruffner.

    The Lady Vandals play four games on Saturday at the Vandalia Tournament, where they are favored to win.

  • VVFD public meeting is Saturday

    Both Vandalia residents and those living in areas outside the city are being encouraged to attend a meeting about the future of the Vandalia Volunteer Fire Department on Saturday morning.

    The meeting, at 9 a.m. at city hall, will include discussions on the VVFD’s future funding and operations.

    Those attending the meeting will include Mayor Rick Gottman, VVFD chiefs and other members of a committee that Gottman appointed to study the department’s future.

  • ExxonMobil Annuitants

    The ExxonMobil Annuitants Club met on Thursday, Aug. 30, at the Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia for its monthly meeting and luncheon.
    The pledge of allegiance was followed by the meal blessing by Brock Fisher.
    After the meal was finished, President Dean Black opened the meeting and welcomed the guests.
    The secretary and treasurer report were read and approved.
    Birthdays and anniversaries for August were read.  It was stated that Ed and Doris Helm were celebrating their 65th anniversary on Sept. 7.

    Russell Hewitt
    An open house is being planned for Russell Hewitt in honor of his 91st birthday.
    The reception will be held from 2-4 p.m. this Saturday at Brookstone Estates on West Fillmore Street in Vandalia.
    Family and friends are invited to the reception. The family requests that no gifts be given.
    A card shower is also being requested for Hewitt, who was born on Sept. 12, 1921, in Danville. Cards may be sent to 1607 W. Fillmore St., Vandalia, Ill. 62471.

  • Engagement

    Capt. Adam W. Cole and Krista S. Kukowski have announced their engagement and upcoming marriage.

    The future groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred D. Cole of Vandalia.
    He is a 2001 graduate of Vandalia Community High School, earned his undergraduate degree in history from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in diplomacy from Norwich University.
    He is a captain in the Illinois Army National Guard, serving as the commander of C Co. in Litchfield. He works at Camp Lincoln in Springfield.

    Kari Jo McCarty and Aaron Nathan Boerema have announced their engagement.
    The future bride is the daughter of Ed and Kathy McCarty of Vandalia.

    Brad and Lynn Portz of Vandalia are the parents of a girl born at 2:04 p.m. on Monday, July 9, 2012, at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon.

  • Durbin-50 years

    Mr. and Mrs. David Durbin of Farina will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this Sunday.


    David and Lila Durbin were married on Sept. 16, 1962, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in St. Peter.
    They are the parents of three children: Sherri and her husband Don VonBehren of Summerville, S.C., Darren of Alma and Brady of Farina.
    They have four grandchildren: Kara VonBehren, Alec VonBehren, Kyle Durbin and Shelby Durbin.

  • Smithson-50 years

    Joe and Ruth Smithson of Farina will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 28.

    The Smithsons were married at First Pentecostal Church in Vandalia, with the Rev. J.H. Reeter officiating.
    They are the parents of three sons: Brian and his wife Melodye, Darin and his wife Stephanie, and Brad and his wife Lori.
    They have 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
    An open house reception will be held from 2-5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, in the gym at St. Peter’s Lutheran School in St. Peter.

    Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Schaal of St. Peter will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 23, with an open house.
