  • Warning issued for senior citizens

    As the summer season approaches, incidents of crime directed at senior citizens rise.
    As a result of the warm weather construction season, offenders cruise residential neighborhoods looking for elderly people outside their homes, performing such chores as gardening.
    Once that senior is located, the perpetrator’s ruse begins.
    The offenders will lure the senior citizen into the backyard under the guise of showing something requiring immediate attention.

  • Family Reunion

    The Sam and Clara Grubaugh family reunion will be held on Sunday, July 1, in the pavilion at Rogier Park on West Fillmore Street in Vandalia.
    The reunion will include a noon potluck.
    All family members and friends are invited.

  • Shobonier School Reunion is Sunday

    The annual Shobonier School Reunion will be held this Sunday at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia.
    A social gathering is at 11 a.m., and a buffet lunch is at noon.
    A short business meeting will be held at approximately 1:30 p.m.
    Anyone who attended Shobonier School, or has ties to the school, is invited to attend.

  • War of 1812 Remembrance Day

    Mayor Rick Gottman has signed a proclamation declaring Monday, June 18, as the War of 1812 Remembrance Day.

  • ExxonMobil Annuitants

    The ExxonMobil Annuitants Club met on Thursday, May 31, at Ponderosa Steakhouse in Vandalia for its monthly meeting and luncheon.
    The pledge of allegiance was followed with Brock Fisher giving the prayer before the meal. After the meal, President Dean Black welcomed everyone, including guests.
    Elloise Black introduced to the group the guest speaker, Lynn Gartke, program director for the Center for Senior Renewal. Gartke gave an outline of all the services that they have to offer at the center.

  • Anniversary

    Carroll Wayne and Ruth Ann Beck of Herrick will celebrate 50 years of marriage on Sunday, June 17.
    A celebration with family, including dinner, will be held in Effingham at Lone Star Steakhouse.

    Carroll Wayne Beck and Ruth Ann Barnes were united in marriage on Sunday June 17, 1962, in the Herrick Christian Church. Dennis Corley officiated the double-ring ceremony.
    The maid of honor was Joyce (Brown) Nance, and Bob Barnes served as best man. The other attendants were Linda Kay (Austin) Bumgardner and Roger Henderson.

    Brownstown First Baptist holding VBS this week

    First Baptist Church of Brownstown is hosting Vacation Bible School this week. It started on Monday and will conclude  on Friday. The program runs from 6-8:30 p.m. daily.
    "Come Fly With Us" is the theme.

    Brownstown First Christian Church is holding Vacation Bible School for children ages 2 through sixth grade this week.

  • Area women attend district LWML event

    Women from several Fayette County churches recently attended the 67th annual meeting of the Central Illinois District of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League in Rock Island.
    The theme for the convention was "Come to the Water," based on John 4:4.
    About 250 delegates, members and guests participated in the event, which was hosted by Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Island.

  • Evergreen Outreach

    This time of year brings many special occasions – including graduations, weddings, reunions, ball games and other early summer activities.
    This month, summer begins on June 20. Also, next week Flag Day will, as always, be observed on June 14, and there is to be a pause for the pledge at 6 p.m.
    Music by Iris Price greeted guests as they arrived at Evergreen Outreach. Leader Beulah Brown opened the program by announcing the birthdays of Sharon LaDage, Mary Crawford, Debra Williams and Ruth Ann Scott.
