  • Vandalia picks up road win at Marquette Catholic

    The Vandalia High School football team evened its season record on Friday, defeating Marquette Catholic 13-12 after Matt Hoffman caught a 6-yard touchdown with 36.7 seconds left in the game.

    The Vandals will host Litchfield next Friday at 7 p.m.

  • Democrats campaign at events on Saturday

    Area Democrats gathered at two locations on Saturday evening to visit with the party’s local, regional and state candidates in November’s general election.
    The first gathering was at The Depot, where a reception was held for Alexi Giannoulias, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by President Barack Obama.
    That reception was hosted by one of his campaign staff members, Andy Schwarm, a Loogootee area native and Brownstown High School graduate, and his mother, Ann Schwarm.

    Lilly Caroline Burrow
    John and Dawn Burrow of Altamont are the parents of a girl born at 4:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010, at St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital in Effingham.
    She weighed 8 pounds, 3 ounces, and was 19½ inches long. She was named Lilly Caroline.
    Grandparents are Brian and Sharon Bell-Carruthers, and Dan and Marilyn Burrow, all of Altamont.
    Great-grandparents are J.R. and Nancy Bell of St. Elmo, Dorothy Burrow and the late Norman Burrow of Altamont, and J. Marshall and Carla Mollet of Greenville.

    Helen Theresa Kupferer
    Helen Theresa Kupferer of Vandalia will celebrate her 106th birthday on Tuesday, Sept. 21.
    She is the daughter of the late Charles and Ann Gibbons Kupferer. She was born in St. Louis on the home site on Sept. 21, 1904. She married Leland Ray on July 10, 1931.
    Helen lives at home with daughter, Carole White. She also has one daughter, Donna and her husband Leland Fessler, who are deceased.
    She enjoys reading and holding her dog, Sam. She will spend her birthday with family and friends.

    Garrison Reunion
    The Garrison family reunion was held Sunday, Aug. 8, at the St. Elmo City Park, with 33 present.
    Ervin Garrison gave the blessing before the noon meal.
    A short business meeting was held and the treasurer’s report was given.
    Marriage recorded: Sarah Garrison and Matt Gillman, November 2009. Birth: Ryan Gabriel Haslett on Feb. 22, 2010, to Chris and Bern Haslett.
    One death, that of Lois “Imogine” Garrison, on Jan. 5, 2010.

  • Knights of Columbus Candy Days

    Mayor Rick Gottman, right, has signed a proclamation declaring this Friday and Saturday as Knights of Columbus MH Days in Vandalia. Shown with Gottman is Mike Sahr, Fayette County Knights of Columbus MH chairman. On Friday and Saturday, the Knights will be accepting donations and handing out Tootsie Rolls to help raise funds for their efforts to assist mentally handicapped children of Vandalia and Fayette County.

  • Mega Melon

    Debbie Huber holds the 47-pound watermelon she grew on the Huber farm northwest of Vandalia. She also grew a watermelon weighing close to 30 pounds.

  • Hester is new Soroptimist president

    On Thursday, July 1, Joy Clymer, outgoing president of Soroptimist International Vandalia, called the first meeting of the club for the year 2010-11 to order, asking members to stand and repeat the pledge to the flag and Soroptimist Grace.

    Kimberley Moore of Patoka and Ryan Chappel of Vandalia were united in marriage on Saturday, July 10, 2010, at the home of her parents by the pond, officiated by John Klockenga.  
    The bride is the daughter of Douglas and Puanani Moore of Patoka.
    She chose Sarah Payne, Ashley Towler and Laura Thoman, all friends of the bride, and Megan Chappel, sister of the groom, as her bridesmaids.
    The groom is the son of Ernie and Tammy Chappel and Diane Chappel, all of Vandalia.
