    ETSN Marion M. Mayfield
    ETSN Marion M. Mayfield is now stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, abord the USS Texas SSN775.
    Mayfield, the son of Layne and Brenda Mayfield of rural Vandalia and a 2006 graduate of Vandalia Community High School, enlisted in the Army in December 2008.
    He started basic training at Great Lakes Recruit Training Center in January 2009 and graduated in March of that year.
    He then started Naval Submarine School in Groton, Conn., graduating on Jan. 14 of this year.

  • Soroptimist convention here this week

    The city of Vandalia and Soroptimist International of Vandalia recently announced that Soroptimist International of the Americas South Central Region District 1 will be having its annual convention in Vandalia this Friday through Sunday.
    Attendees will be coming from all over, including Region Governor Jaquie Bond from Kansas City. Local Soroptimist member Joy Clymer is the director for District 1, and Jennifer Hester is the president of the Vandalia club.

  • Doyle injured in wreck

    A rural Vandalia man was seriously injured in a one-vehicle wreck early Sunday morning.
    According to the Illinois State Police, Harmon A. Doyle, 59, was northbound on U.S. Route 51 in a 2005 Nissan Altima when the vehicle left the roadway on the right.
    The state police said Doyle came back onto the roadway and then went to the left, going off the roadway and down an embankment before overturning. Doyle was thrown from the vehicle.
    He was taken to Fayette County Hospital with serious injuries.

    Looking For a Mouse…
    Usually, when one is looking for a mouse, it is with dire and formidable thoughts and an intent to remove said mouse from the premises, permanently. In fact, the word, “terminate” even comes to mind.
    Not so in this case. The particular “mouse” I am looking for seems to almost be extinct, worn out, gone bad, etc. It is the “mouse” with which to operate my computer.
