  • State still behind on payments to schools

    The Vandalia Board of Education, in an abbreviated meeting on Tuesday, heard that the state continues to lag several months behind in its payments to school districts.
    Superintendent Rich Well said that the state owes the district $526,652 for transportation and special education, $25,000 for the Pre-K program that was started again this year on a small scale, and $250,000 for the Title I and Title II programs.
    Additionally, about $600,000 is owed to the Okaw Area Vocational Center.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Shawn L. Stolley, 28, Decatur, was arrested on Jan. 17 for failure to appear in court on a charge of illegal transportation of alcohol. Bond was $3,000.
    • Paul L. VanUytven, 57, RR 1, Ramsey, was arrested on Jan. 16 on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and illegal transportation of alcohol. Bond was $3,000.
    • Delta D. Bunyard, 39, 330 S. Sixth St., Apt. 6, Vandalia, was arrested on Jan. 16 on a charge of disorderly conduct. Bond was $1,000.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Shirley J. Johnston, 39, 2311 W. St. Clair St., Vandalia, turned herself in on Jan. 12 on a warrant for failure to appear in court in small claims and ordinance violation cases. Bond was $350 cash.
    • Shawn M. Keith, 26, 409 S. Moreland St., Vandalia, was arrested on Jan. 9 for failure to appear in court. Bond was $2,500.
    • Ted E. Hanner, 36, Bunker Hill, was arrested on Jan. 9 for failure to appear in court on a charge of felony driving under the influence of alcohol. Bond was $30,000.

    Dec. 28
    • 2:40 p.m.-Officers investigated damage to a vehicle parked in the 900 block of West Edwards Street.
    • Officers issued two tickets for speeding and a written warning for an improper turn.
    Dec. 29
    • 8:01 a.m.-Officers responded to a report of a break-in at A to Z Automotive, 1350 Janett Ave. No further information was given.
    • 8:37 a.m.-Officers responded to a report of a break-in at Sisters Consignment, 1401 Veterans Ave. No further information was given.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Matthew M. Juds, 20, Kinmundy, was arrested on Jan. 2 on a felony warrant and an Illinois Department of Corrections warrant. Bond was $20,000, and he was released to the IDOC.
    • Susan L. Beesley, 53, 220 N. Adams St., Vandalia, was arrested on Jan. 2 on a charge of retail theft (two counts). Bond was $1,000.
    • Shawn M. Kubina, 18, 1032 W. Johnson St., Vandalia, was arrested on charges of possession of a controlled substance and driving while his license is suspended or revoked. No bond amount was listed.

  • Vandalia Police

    Dec. 13
    • Officers responded to a two-vehicle accident at Kennedy Boulevard and Veterans Avenue. According to the report, a vehicle driven by Edward A. Opfer, 81, of Shobonier, turned left in front of a vehicle driven by Lauren R. Gill, 72, of Brownstown, striking the side of Gill’s vehicle. Opfer was ticketed for failure to yield turning left.
    Dec. 21
    • Police received a report at 11:49 a.m. of the theft of an iPod and purse from a vehicle in the 1400 block of Shelley Drive that was unlocked.

  • Sheriff's Arrest Log

    • Joseph S. Reynolds, 34, RR 1, St. Peter, was arrested on Dec. 27 on charges of possession of a controlled substance, criminal damage to property less than $300, criminal trespass and disorderly conduct. Bond was $1,000.
    • Timothy L. Lytle, 31, St. Louis, Mo., was arrested on Dec. 26 on charges of driving while his license is suspended and speeding, and for failure to appear in court on a charge of driving while his license is suspended. Bond was $4,000.

  • Vandalia Police Dec. 22, 2011

    Dec. 8
    • Jeff Burnam, 402 W. Jackson St., reported at 8:01 p.m. that his vehicle had been egged. No damage was reported.
    • An officer took a complaint at 3:43 p.m. of a mailbox being damaged at 220 N. Adams St.
    • Officers were called to an apartment in the 1500 block of North Eighth Street for a report of a domestic dispute and possible child abuse. The Department of Children & Family Services was notified of the complaint.
    • Two warning tickets were issued, one for speeding and one for improper display of a license plate.
