  • Garden Party

    Historical Vandalia Inc. held a garden party on the grounds of the Fayette County Museum on Saturday to raise funds for improvements to the old Presbyterian Church that houses the museum and Artworks Gallery.

  • Security measures added at schools

    The Vandalia Board of Education learned on Tuesday about additional security equipment being installed at two buildings in the district.
    Superintendent Rich Well told board members that the new security equipment is being installed at entrances to the administration building and the Okaw Area Vocational Center.
    That equipment will include security doors and video surveillance equipment for both buildings, the only two in the district that currently do not have those security measures.

  • Pool fundraiser includes water carnival

    As part of its ongoing efforts to help raise funds for the rehabilitation of the Vandalia Swimming Pool, the pool staff is offering special activities during its first Moonlight Madness of the summer.
    This Friday’s Moonlight Madness will include a pool carnival that will feature pool activities and games.
    The pool fundraiser will feature games from 4-9 p.m., and swimming from 6-11:30 p.m.

  • Restroom vandalism again a problem in parks

    The arrival of summer weather has again coincided with vandalism in restrooms in Vandalia’s parks.
    At its meeting last Thursday, Vandalia Park District trustees discussed possible ways of addressing the ongoing problems with the restrooms.
    Park district Superintendent Kent Torbeck said that the vandalism has included stuffing the toilets and then flushing them, smearing substances on the walls and “throwing trash everywhere.”

  • Circle K & gaming machines

    As a representative of a company explained its desire to install gaming devices at its local convenience store to the Vandalia City Council, some aldermen expressed their concerns about that plan.
    John Stanisz, business manager for Circle K’s Midwest Division, told the council that even though state law states that gaming licenses can only be granted to businesses that have liquor licenses, “The intent (of Circle K) is to not sell alcohol.”

  • Red Cross Honors Craig

    At its annual meeting on June 5 in Alton, the Southwestern Illinois Chapter of the American Red Cross presented a Community Partnership Award to Kendra Craig, the Fayette County Emergency  Management Agency coordinator.
